FOOTBALL FANS FROM BRIGG WATCHED MEMORABLE GRIMSBY TOWN SEASON NOW RECALLED IN NEW BOOK

The Brigg Branch of the Grimsby Town Supporters' Club ran buses to take local fans of the Mariners to all home games at Blundell Park from the late 1950s through to the early 1980s, picking up outside the Brocklesby Ox, on Cary Lane, opposite the Britannia Inn and outside the cemetery. The bus did likewise in Wrawby, Barnetby, Bigby, Searby and Grasby.
This month sees the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of one of Grimsby Town's most enjoyable, successful and high-scoring seasons, 1971/72.
A new book has been written by Rob McIlveen, called Walking Down The Grimsby Road. It is now on sale. View details through this link...
Grimsby won the Division Four championship, and veteran striker Matt Tees was the top scorer, with Stuart Brace not far behind.
Ken Fisher, from Brigg, was one of the local fans who followed the Mariners that season and sometimes took his camera to matches.
Two examples are seen here. Matt Tees is top left in action at Blundell Park 50 years ago. Midfielder Mike Hickman features in the centre of the other image, with Stuart Brace beyond.
Grimsby won their last game 3-0 at home to Exeter City in May 1972 before a crowd of more than 22,000. And that was in the basement section of the Football League!
Matt later played some games at Brigg Town's Hawthorns (also photographed by Ken - see below).
