ANGLING AFTER MORE VISITORS TO BRIGG

For many decades, anglers from industrial areas of Yorkshire came in large numbers to Brigg - by train - to enjoy fishing the River Ancholme. They even ran special cheap day excursions.
Some hotels in town specialised in accommodating other piscatorial pleasure seekers who stayed over for a number of days.
Could there be a chance that North Lincolnshire Council and Brigg traders (through their new go-ahead partnership) might get together and try to re-establish this once lucrative trade? If only on a smaller scale (pardon the pun!)
The Victorians and Edwardians did not have the marketing advances afforded by the internet. But the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and the Great Central had enough about them to publicise Brigg as the fisherman's friend by using only posters, letters and handbills (assisted by word of mouth between happy anglers).
The River Ancholme still offers good sport. And although Brigg now has passenger trains only on Saturday (running out of Sheffield Midland) Yorkshire fishermen can get over here very rapidly along the motorway network.

OBJECTION VOICED TO ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS FOR BRIGG HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

Brigg Town Council is objecting to a planning application to amend access arrangement for the development of 60 dwellings on land off Island Carr Road, Bridge Street, Brigg.
Councillors on the Planning and Environment Committee, which met in the Angel Suite, expressed concerns about road safety.
The Brigg authority's views will be made known to North Lincolnshire Council planners, who will consider whether to grant permission to vary, and remove, conditions attached to the outline permission granted earlier.

BRIGG SUMMER WEDDING FAYRE ALL SET FOR ANGEL SUITE

Goodie bags, prize draws, competitions and samples will be on offer in Brigg at a major Summer Wedding Fayre.
It is to held on Sunday, September 9 at the Angel Suite - DN20 8LB. Admission is free - everyone welcome.
September's event follows the huge success of the Spring Wedding Fayre.
Karen Deeley, manager of the Angel Suite which is overseen by Brigg Town Council, says the fayre provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of local businesses and to meet new customers.
She adds: "The event will also give visitors the opportunity to see the Angel Suite's facilities as a view to hiring as the ideal venue for you or your family's future celebrations."

WILL WHITER SHADE OF PALE PROVE HIT WITH BRIGG RESIDENTS?

A pioneering trial of new street lights was revealed at Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite.
O'Hanlon Avenue, Yarborough Road, Burgess Road and St James' Road have been given "low energy, carbon-saving street lights" of differing types by North Lincolnshire Council, the highway authority.
They now want to gauge the reaction of local residents.
If all goes well, low-energy lights could be installed across North Lincolnshire, with major savings to the public purse.
Householders have been supplied with feedback forms, and Brigg town councillors also have the opportunity to respond.
The first thing that strikes you about the on-test lights is they are white, rather than the familiar orangey yellow.
The survey form asks people whether they consider them too bright, about right, could be brighter, or poor.
North Lincolnshire Council, whose highways issues are under the control of Brigg and Wolds' Coun Nigel Sherwood, says the trial will be "fully transparent."
The police will also be invited to comment on the new lights, presumably on the road safety and neighbourhood watch grounds.
North Lincolnshire Council has asked for completed questionnaires to be returned to its highways HQ in Scunthorpe by August 24.
And then we will know whether  a whiter shade of pale or mellow yellow is going to call the tune in the years go come.

U2 MAY BE UNABLE TO RECYCLE YOUR BATTERIES IN BRIGG

At Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite, Coun Ben Nobbs suggested Tesco did not have a battery re-cycling facility and felt that should be drawn to the company's attention.
"They must sell a lot of batteries," he commented.
He also raised the issue of motorists turning right when existing from Tesco onto Barnard Avenue, where the signs suggest drivers should all turn left.
Coun Rob Waltham, who is a member of the cabinet overseeing North Lincolnshire Council as well being as a town councillor, said a site meeting was planned "involving highways and Tesco."
The problem posed by drivers exiting Tesco has also been discussed by the Brigg Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT), which involves representatives of the police, the council, neighbourhood watch and North Lincolnshire Homes.
More prominent signage is one suggestion for reducing the problem.

ORGANISERS PRAISED FOR BRIGG DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

The acclaimed celebrations held in Brigg town centre - and down at the Recreation Ground - to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the beginning of June cost much less than envisaged.
Both sections were very well-attended, with singing and dancing in the Market Place, followed by a wide range of activities down at the Rec, off Wrawby Road which followed a parade through Cary Lane, Ash Grove, Redcombe Lane, Grammar School Road and Preston Drive.
The actual cost to Brigg Town Council will be £1,110, although the event cost almost £3,500 to stage.
A special Jubilee Committee was formed to organise the event, with money pledged to support the good cause by Brigg Town Council and North Lincolnshire Council, and other donations being received.
Some income was also generated on the day.
There will be a public meeting in the Angel Suite on August 14 to "wind up" the Jubilee Committee.
The committee's concluding financial report and final grant award were considered  by Brigg Town Council at its monthly meeting last night.
Coun Ben Nobbs, chairman of the organising body, welcomed the "reassurance" that had been afforded over funding the event, which had allowed it to proceed.
Town Mayor Councillor Carl Sherwood thanked the committee for staging an excellent event he described as being "really worthwhile for the people of Brigg."

MORE TIME FOR PEDESTRIANS TO GET ACROSS A18 IN BRIGG

The time the lights are on green to allow Brigg pedestrians to cross the busy A18 at the button-controlled crossing near the pensioners' dwellings in Horse Fair Paddock has been doubled from 14 to 24 seconds.
This follows suggestions that the time given for people to cross was insufficient.
North Lincolnshire Council has had the adjustment made.

ACTION CAN NOW BE TAKEN TO DEAL WITH PARKED-UP VEHICLES IN BRIGG TOWN CENTRE

North Lincolnshire Council civil enforcement officers DO have sufficient powers to deal with vehicles parked up in the pedestrian zone in Brigg without proper cause, the Town Council's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite heard last night.
Previously it had been suggested that these officers could not take action in such cases.
The update came from Coun Rob Waltham, who is also a member of the Cabinet at North Lincolnshire Council, who confirmed: "Vehicles can be ticketed."
PATROLS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT - SO DRIVERS WHO FLOUT THE RESTRICTIONS ARE ADVISED TO TAKE CAREFUL NOTE!
This new development will be seen as good news by many pedestrians who visit the town centre.
There have been complaints over many years about vehicles being driven into the pedestrian zone and parked up while their drivers access cashpoints or visit other locations.
Coun Waltham also made reference to other measures now under consideration to deter vehicles from being driven through the pedestrian area.
It is thought that some recent legal changes have come into force that make ticketing of vehicles possible by civil enforcement officers.
The issue of traffic being in the pedestrian zone without good cause has been flagged up for action by the Brigg Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) which is a body including representatives of the police, businesses, councils in the district, Neighbourhood Watch and Safer Neighbourhoods.

BRIGG BOMBER QUADRATHLON UPDATE

It was enjoyable to visit the banks of the new River Ancholme a couple of Sundays ago to watch some of the Brigg Bomber Quadrathlon - notably the final, running section of the event that went down Cadney Road, Bridge Street and finished at the Ancholme Leisure Centre, just over the border in Scawby Brook.
We chatted to Coun Ben Nobbs for some time, as the warm sun beat down (strange this summer!) and now see that some of the pix he was busy taking have been used in a very full report on the website of event organisers Lincsquad.

60 NEW HOMES FOR BRIGG PLAN CONSIDERED

A planning application to amend the access to a proposed development of 60 dwellings off Island Carr Road, Bridge Street, Brigg, will be considered by Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee on Monday night, July 23. The meeting is in the Angel Suite at 6.45pm and is open to interested members of the public.
Brigg town councillors may make observations, if they wish, on planning applications but the final decision on whether to approve the application rests with the North Lincolnshire unitary authority.
The planning session will be followed at 7.30pm by the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council, which is also open to the public.
Public Question Time is included on the agenda, as always, to offer residents the chance to raise any topic of interest to them.
Among the matters to be considered will be the concluding report from the Brigg Diamond Jubilee Committee, which organised, and oversaw, how the town celebrated Her Majesty's 60th anniversary as Queen. There were events in the town centre and down at the Recreation Ground - enjoyed by hundreds of people.
An update on North Lincolnshire Council issues affecting Brigg will also be delivered at Monday night's meeting, Couns Carl Sherwood, Nigel Sherwood and Rob Waltham being the Brigg and Wolds representatives and holding posts in the Cabinet which makes major decisions.

Duck Egg Theatre Company, which holds classes in Brigg, has planned a range of summer activities for young people aged 6-19 in North Lincolnshire over the summer holidays - billed as the 'Summer of Awesome'.
Funded by Children in Need and Awards for All, the projects target young people in rural isolation and aim to give young people in the region the chance to perform pieces inspired by their own stories.

Haley Cox, Education Director, said "Both projects cost only £20 for the whole week and performance, that is less than £4 a day to work with professional acting and vocal coaches, create an amazing show, get a chance toreally have their voices heard through the story of the pieces and have anawesome time doing it."

TRIBUTES TO RETIRED BRIGG TEACHER JACK MOORE

News of the death of Jack Moore, retired chemistry teacher, will sadden many former pupils of Brigg Grammar School and Sir John Nelthorpe School across the world.
Likewise, the many members of Brigg Men's Hockey Club who played alongside him will wish to raise a glass or two in memory of a fine and very long-serving defender.
Retired Sir John Nelthorpe School headteacher, David Brittain, said Jack had been ill for some time but had remained cheerful and enjoyed remembering the 'old times' with his friends and former colleagues whenever they were able to visit.
"Jack was a legend in school circles and dearly loved by many who were inspired by his love of chemistry, sport, the Lakes and the occasional half at the Angel," said David.
"Others will remember his time in the boarding house, or on the hockey field, but above all he was a great schoolmaster and dedicated all his working life in the service of local children and students.
"Rest in peace, dear Jack."
The funeral service will be on Thursday, 26th July at 11am at St John The Evangelist Church, Brigg, followed by noon committal at Woodlands Crematorium, Scunthorpe. Friends and are all invited to join the family afterwards at Elsham Golf Club.
Family flowers only - donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Society or Cancer Research UK.

NF adds: I first encountered Jack - known to generations of Brigg Grammar School pupils as Archie - when starting there in 1967. He taught chemistry in his own style, with a firm hand but a joke, or quip, always to hand, which generally began with: "You, boy...!"
He was a very good hockey player in the top Brigg team in the days when home games were on grass at Brigg Rec. However, as he dropped down the teams with advancing years, he found no difficulty in adapting to the arrival of synthetic surfaces.
He was always good fun off the field, notably with his contributions to in-car conversations while we made our way to, and from, Yorkshire League matches.
On one occasion we set off from the Queen's Arms in Brigg to play at Huddersfield, with Jack at the wheel.
Umpire Len Marshall was among the passengers and a discussion kicked off about how skilled navigation in the RAF  needed to be mastered in the days of old-fashioned bombers like the Lancaster.
Eventually I had to join the conversation and point out to Jack that his first choice at the end of the M180 had been the wrong one and we had better pull off and turn round.
So much for navigation!
Jack particularly enjoyed attending Briggensians' Association annual dinners at Elsham Golf Club, where he would meet up again with so many boys (now men) he had taught over so many years.
Somehow Jack, and late chemistry teaching colleague Gerry Longden, steered some of us with no aptitude for their subject through our O-Level exam after five years of hard slog...for them as well as us!

BRIGG BUSINESSES REALLY BUZZING

Brigg Town Business Partnership is described as "really buzzing now" and the Events Committee is working hard to create  "a place to remember" and bring people into our town, even if it is raining!
When the Olympic Torch was going through Brigg, a visiting BBC Radio Humberside reporter said: "It's absolutely swarming with red, white and blue. People are hanging out the windows in this lovely, elegant town."
On Saturday, September 1, Brigg it is going to be alive with our very own Music Festival, Briggstock, promoting trade in the town and putting the community at the heart of the high street. And with everyone's help it is going to be fantastic.
There will be a Briggstock Balloon Race a month before Briggstock - on Saturday, 28th July.
Tickets are available from businesses throughout the town (look out for posters in windows).
The traders' website is www.briggisbest.co.uk
Many of us will remember the success of the last balloon race staged by the partnership, which brought many people into the town centre for the launch.

BRIGG OFFICES CENTRAL TO PUBLIC PURSE SAVINGS

Hewson House council offices in Station Road, Brigg

Brigg is now at the centre of an interesting pooling of resources by North Lincolnshire Council and a neighbouring unitary authority.
On July 1, North and North East Lincolnshire Councils started a joint local taxation and benefit service that will save taxpayers £1.3m.
The shared service is now delivering:

  • Housing and council tax benefits
  • Collection of council tax and non-domestic rates
  • Management and administration of the services

The service will be delivered across the two sites – Hewson House in Brigg (Station Road) and Civic Centre at Cleethorpes, with employees remaining at their current work base, but working as one team.
Designated employees from both councils will have immediate access to any necessary data in accordance with the Data Protection Act.  But each council will maintain their own records.
Telephone calls will continue to be routed through each council’s individual call centre and face-to-face enquiries will continue to be delivered n the normal way at both councils.
Voluntary redundancies and retirements, coupled with careful handling of vacancies has meant that there will be no compulsory redundancies.
Coun Neil Poole, of Messingham, cabinet member for policy and resources at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Sharing services makes sense as it enables a more efficient, joined up approach and saves taxpayers money.
“North and North East Lincolnshire Council were providing separate services but very similar – to their residents.  And this just does not make good business sense, when you think how close we are to our counterparts in Grimsby.
“The new arrangement is working well, and while too early to say exactly how much money we have saved as we’ve only just started the new arrangement, I am confident that we will be able to save around £1.3m over the next few years.”
Coun Darren Billard, portfolio holder for finance, governance and support services at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “It’s really pleasing to see these plans come to fruition. It makes good financial sense for us to work with our neighbouring authority when delivering some services, and the fact that we can save so much money in this situation is proof of that.”

BRIGG TOWN CRICKETERS GO TOP OF THE LEAGUE

BY GARY SMITH - BRIGG TOWN CRICKET CLUB

Congratulations are in hand to all the players in the 1st team . Following their win on Saturday against North Ferriby, Brigg Town CC are now top of East Yorkshire Alliance Division Three by one point over Roos .
This season must have been one of the most difficult years with record rainfall from the first game right up to the present . It shows that the effort put in to complete fixtures in adversity pays off in the long run.
If we can keep the same attitude for the second half of the season I am sure Brigg Town can win the league .

BRIGG HERITAGE CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENED TOMORROW

The official opening of the Brigg Heritage Centre - in the Angel building, off the Market Place - will be performed tomorrow  (Monday July 9) at 11am by Andrew Percy, the MP for Brigg and Goole.

DID YOU WITNESS PROTEST IN BRIGG YESTERDAY?

There was a silent protest along Barnard Avenue in Brigg yesterday, people holding anti-abortion placards.
It's not something we remember seeing before in the town.
We were passing by on the other side, on the A18, between the Catholic Church and the Methodist Church, when we spied the folk seeking to put over their point of view to passing motorists and pedestrians.

FIREWORK DISPLAY 'LONG OVERDUE FOR PEOPLE OF BRIGG'

Gary Roberts, sales and marketing director with Scunthorpe firm Rainbow Fireworks, says he thinks a communal display is long overdue for the people of Brigg.
Many Brigg people will remember the early November get-togethers that ran for many years at Brigg Recreation Ground.
Gary says that for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations his firm produced SEVEN shows over a weekend.
"Just down the road we put on a jaw-dropping fireworks display for South Ferriby," he says.
Fireworks did not form part of Brigg's well-received Jubilee celebrations.
Gary now says Rainbow Fireworks is willing to provide a professional display at a reduced cost this year to get the traditional Brigg bonfire/fireworks display "back up and running for 2012."
Rainbow Fireworks produce 60+ displays a year ranging from those accompanying bonfires to major public events.
Yesterday (July 7) they were at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sheffield producing a display for a concert “Music in the Park” - entertaining a crowd of around 15,000 people with a firework spectacular.
If anyone reading this is interested in taking up Gary's offer about a Brigg firework display, they can call him on 07931 949490 or email garyroberts@rainbowfireworks.co.uk

SPADEWORK DONE ON SMALL ALLOTMENTS IN BRIGG

Part of the Grammar School Road allotment site.

Brigg has allotments off Grammar School Road and Atherton Way/Redcombe Lane, managed and run by Brigg Town Council. Due to high demand from green-fingered folk wanting to grow their own veg, there's a waiting list.
Now, in order to "meet the needs of the waiting list" and create plots of a more manageable size, a decision has been taken to divide vacant ones to create additional plots on the Grammar School Road site.
The rents for these newer, smaller plots is being worked out in proportion to what tenants pay for the existing, larger ones.
More information may become available about this talking point when Brigg Town Council's Property and Services Committee meets on Wednesday, July 11 in the Angel Suite Lounge from 7.30pm. This session is open to interested members of the public.
At 7pm on Wednesday, there's a meeting of the Brigg Town Council Planning and Environment Committee (also open to the public). Planning applications will be considered, including an application to erect a two-storey rear extension at 1 Colton Street.

QUEEN SENDS HER BEST WISHES TO BRIGG

The Brigg Town Business Partnership must have been thrilled to hear that the Queen liked the present sent to her to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
A treasured letter from Buckingham Palace, on official notepaper, has been received by chairman Byron Teague (pictured above), of Brigg Fruit, Veg and Flowers, in Wrawby Street.
In the communique, Her Majesty's Chief Clerk says he had been asked to thank Byron, Paul Keane (vice-chairman) and members of the Brigg Business Partnership for the kind letter containing a message of royal greetings during the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne.
The Chief Clerk says Her Majesty was pleased to receive "the splendid card and photograph album" and that she sends her best wishes.
You may remember that various views of Brigg and its traders and personalities in patriotic mood were placed in the album.
