BARNETBY UNITED FC v THE BUTCHERS ARMS - MATCH REPORT & PICTURES

Barnetby United Football Club v The Butchers Arms, April 30, 2022

Barnetby United produced a special 12-page souvenir match programme for the last game of the season in EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District Football League Division One yesterday (Saturday, April 30).
The Railwaymen were bidding to secure third spot - their highest ever placing in this competition. However, they went down 2-1 to The Butchers Arms at Silver Street.
The report below and match pictures come courtesy of Lee Fielden. Barnetby are wearing the black and white kit.
Established in 1936, the club played one season in the Scunthorpe League in 1945/46 - Reg Mottram scoring their debut goal in a 2-1 defeat at Sun Engineers (Crowle). Barnetby then played elsewhere for many years until rejoining the local competition.

FINAL DAY DEFEAT SEES 3RD PLACE SLIP

The Railwaymen suffered their 1st defeat in 10 league outings and therefore could only equal their highest finish of 4th in the Scunthorpe League.
In what was Barnetby’s 999th league game in the Scunthorpe League they had to contend with a raft of changes and face a very experienced Butchers Arms side.
The opening exchanges were fairly equal until The Butchers began to gain a foothold in the game. They took the lead when Matt Graves powered a header home from a corner after half an hour and extended their lead on the stroke of half-time as Adam Sparrow rolled the ball home following a defensive mix up.
Try as they might in the 2nd half, the ball would not fall Barnetby’s way.
Leading scorer O’Callaghan had a couple of long range free kicks, but despite the effort the final touch wasn’t there.
They were thrown a lifeline on 85 minutes when Shaw hoisted a high ball into the area which was flicked into his own net by an unfortunate defender to make it 2-1.
This sparked Barnetby into life, but it was too little too late as the Butchers held on for the win.
