BRIGG POLICE OUT AND ABOUT ON A SUNDAY

It was welcome to see two police out and about in Brigg Market Place this morning.
However, if they had chosen to head off down Wrawby Street rather than go the opposite way over the County Bridge, they might have come across a car that had just entered the allegedly vehicle-free pedestrian area.
Months...years...even decades... pass without anyone in authority getting to grips with this issue.

  • A matter for the council?
  • One for the police?
  • Something the expensive CCTV system should be flagging up?

As we've said before, we need monetary penalties imposed, and details released into the public domain, so errant motorists can see they run a high risk of being hit in the pocket if they abuse the pedestrian area.
The "parking police" rightly deal with motorists who fail to comply with yellow lines in side streets and those who do not pay and display in municipal car parks.
We suggest sending some of them into Brigg Market Place for a few days.

BRIGG SPITFIRE SIGHTING SORTIE CONFIRMED

Our posting yesterday afternoon that suggested we might have seen a Spitfire high in the sky over Brigg is yet to be confirmed as a firm sighting.
However, a very reliable source - Nic Dakin, the MP for Scunthorpe - sent us a Tweet to say a Spitfire did perform a fly-past at the nostalgic event in Kirton Lindsey.
So as the Spit we thought we saw over Brigg was heading in that direction, we are claiming a partial sighting.
Yesterday I felt a bit like the co-star of TV series Fantasy Island who used to point to the sky and declare: "Dee Plane! Dee Plane!"

BRIGG PROBLEM REPEATED

The problem Brigg Blog recently reported of someone apparently turning round the traffic lights at the junction of Cary Lane and Ash Grove has happened again overnight.
This again means that as drivers exit Cary Lane they cannot see whether the lights on the opposite side of the A18 are red or green.
Expect remedial action from North Lincolnshire Council, and it might be worth them having a word with the police - the station being only a few yards further along Barnard Avenue.
You don't have to be Inspector Morse or Inspector Frost to make an educated guess about the time of night this is taking place.
As Dixon of Dock Green - years ahead of his time in "community policing" - used to say: "Evenin' all!"

DID YOU SEE SPITFIRE OVER BRIGG TODAY?

We thought we saw, and heard, a Spitfire high over Brigg this afternoon.
One was due to stage a flypast at Kirton Lindsey where major events are planned today (Sept 29) to mark a special 70th anniversary on the airfield front.
But, given the very high wind that's blowing today, we thought the previous plane might be grounded.
So we are wondering whether our old eyes, and ears, may have deceived us.
Confirmed sightings welcome from Brigg and district.
Nothing wrong with surviving Spitfires or Hurricanes, but I have to admit to being keenest on the old Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight whenever it graces the skies over Brigg.

BRIGG BEGINS COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

Christmas Displays opened at 9.30am today at Brigg Garden Centre - just outside town on Bigby High Road.
Thursday saw the new Santa's Attic launched on the first floor of Brian's DIY in Wrawby Street.
We hope they both enjoy good trade and that the tills ring merrily, despite the national economic situation.
Someone living outside Brigg asked me the other day about the date of the 2012 Christmas lights switch-on, accompanied by late night shopping and the Lions' festive fair.
This will take place on Friday, November 30, from 5pm, in the Market Place, if you want to make a note in your diary/phone/organiser.
Worry not, if you keep watching Brigg Blog we will issue reminders nearer the time.

WHISKEY GALORE HELPS BRIGG L.I.V.E.S.

Brigg LIVES accept a donation from the regulars of the King William at Scawby Brook.
A whiskey tasting session was held, along with a raffle.
There were many types of whiskey on offer including those from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and India.
Some were single malts and and others were blends. They raised a fantastic £100.
We trust Sandy Clarvis, of Brigg, won't mind us re-posting this information she uploaded to the LIVES first responders' Facebook page.
Keep up the good work!

BRIGG CONKER COLLECTING CONKS OUT

Brigg Blog stopped off at Brigg Cemetery on Saturday afternoon on the way to cover Brigg Town FC's home match.
This being early autumn, we thought we'd have a scout round on the grassy area near the cemetery entrance and see how many fallen conkers we could find. Sadly, there was only one to hand.
It's been a very wet summer - but surely you'd expect that to assist conker production by very mature horse chestnut trees. Isn't having lots of water available much better for them than drought conditions?
It could be, of course, that the Brigg kids were out early on Saturday and collected what had fallen overnight to string them up - just as we did in the 1960s. But somehow we doubt it.
Do any kids still play conkers in Brigg in 2012?

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS FOR BRIGG HOUSEHOLDERS

Families in the Brigg area are re being encouraged to take simple steps to make sure their homes are safe from electrical fires.
Monday 24 – Friday 30 September is national Electrical Fire Safety Week, and the Fire Kills campaign and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue have joined forces with the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) to offer people advice on staying safe.
Debbie Robinson, deputy community fire safety manager, said: “Just under a third of our house fires last year started from faulty or misused electrical equipment, so it’s essential to be sure that your electrics are in good working order and are used properly.
“All too often, it is the simple things that people could check for themselves that can lead to a serious accident. So we’re urging everyone to make basic visual checks around the home to ensure its electrical safety”.
The top tips for reducing the risk of an electrical fire are:

  1.  Don’t overload plug sockets
  2.  Regularly check for worn or frayed wires
  3. Unplug appliances when not in use, paying special attention to items such as hair straighteners.
  4.  Keep appliances clean and in good working order
  5.  Don’t leave laptops or mobile phones on charge overnight

Lorraine Carney, senior campaigns manager for the Electrical Safety Council, said: “Our free app helps anyone to do a quick visual check on their home by highlighting the potential dangers in each room and explaining how to resolve basic problems in simple, non-technical language. It will also flag more serious issues, for which you should use a registered electrician
“It is available for iPhone and Android phones – just go to the App Store or Android Market, search for ‘Home Electrical Safety Check’ and follow the instructions to download.”

AVERAGE BRIGG FAMILY CAN SAVE ITSELF £560 A YEAR, SAYS COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire Council is encouraging more people to do more on-line "and save an average family home around £560 a year."
Get Online Week (15 to 21 October) aims to get as many people as possible using the Internet.
In North Lincolnshire, 21 per cent or 27,398 adults have never used the Internet and continue to miss out on the huge social and financial benefits it can offer.
You can do a whole range of things on-line through the council’s website at www.northlincs.gov.uk – from paying bills, applying for jobs, reporting your concerns, or simply finding things.
The council is running a series of free taster sessions at libraries across North Lincolnshire between Monday 15 and Friday 19 October, or call 0800 77 1234 to find a free local Internet taster session.
If you know someone who is missing out on all the benefits the Internet can bring, help spark their love of the web.
Find tips and tools to support you, watch inspirational films as famous faces show how they use the web, and places to volunteer by joining the UK’s growing network of digital champions at www.go-on.co.uk/champions.
Councillor Neil Poole, Cabinet Member for Policy and Resources at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“The list of things you can do on-line is endless.  In a world of changing technology, you really can’t afford to get left behind.  The Internet is a powerful tool to getting your business done, whether you are a business or resident, it really does open up a whole new world. Not only that, you can save hundreds of pounds by switching to online as opposed to using the more traditional ways of communicating.
“It’s easy to use and if you are a first-timer, pop along to your local library for a free taster session to help get you started and see for yourself the huge potential the Internet has.
“The council does a lot of its business on line and I would encourage you to give it a go.”  You really have nothing to lose.”
Free Internet taster sessions are running at libraries across North Lincolnshire.
Those relevant to the Brigg area are:
Monday 15 October:
Broughton – 9.15am to 11.15am

BRIGG BLOG NIL, SQUIRREL KNILL (SORRY, NIL)

Brigg Blog this morning had a close encounter with a grey squirrel.
Fortunately, we did not suffer the much-publicised mishap that befell Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill and a pesky critter that crossed his path while the Iron boss was out cycling a few weeks ago.
The squirrel on the path in St Helen's Road, Brigg, raced me and my old Peugeot for about 40 yards before losing interest and speeding off into a driveway.
It was neck and tyre all the way and ended in a dead heat.
Fortunately, it did not end with a dead squirrel.

BRIGG TRAFFIC LIGHTS TARGETED OVERNIGHT

Overnight, someone appears to have turned round two sets of traffic lights on Barnard Avenue in Brigg - at the junction with Ash Grove. They are now at 90 degrees to oncoming traffic exiting Cary Lane.
We hope to see one of the North Lincolnshire Council cabinet members from Brigg later today and alert them to the danger, if they haven't already picked this up.
No doubt some council workers can be alerted to come out on a Saturday and turn them round again, in the interests of road safety.

MORE YELLOW LINES COMING TO BRIGG ?

Additional yellow lines to stop parking on side streets in Brigg could be on the way.
North Lincolnshire Council staff have undertaken a summer "consultation" on Traffic Regulation Orders.
We think this is a "sounding out" process prior to proposals being drawn up for consideration by the powers-that-be at North Lincolnshire Council who will then say Yes or No.

POSSIBLY GETTING ADDED RESTRICTIONS
Almond Grove - No Waiting At Any Time  extended as far as the junction with Birch Avenue.
West Terrace, Forrester Street, Manley Gardens - various sections.
Wrawby Street - lay-by.
Elwes Street - a further section (we think near the Bottlings/Ancholme Gardens)..
Cary Lane - a further section.
Grammar School Road - a further section.
Cary Lane - Wilkinson's store/taxi business end.

A Brigg Town Council committee has been consulted and taken a look at maps provided (of which Brigg Blog does not have copies).
Town councillors have told North Lincolnshire Council highways that they are concerned the Cary Lane taxi business could be "disadvantaged" by the proposed additional parking restrictions.
Town councillors would also like highways staff to take another look at the exit from Glanford Court, off Grammar School Road, where visibility is very poor, due to parked vehicles.
We've saved perhaps the most interesting till last: The parking bays on Bigby Street (between Hewson House and the Post Office).
You may recall that, in a welcome move, motorists were given 20 minutes to park - possibly to nip into the nearby Nisa Local shop or visit the sorting office to pick up a parcel.
North Lincolnshire Council, it is suggested, may look to extend this 20 minutes to one hour.
The Town Council's planning and environment committee gave the change a mixed response.
Town councillors (collectively) think allowing drivers to park their cars for one hour in the bay immediately opposite the Post Office could be detrimental to the many who just want to park up for a few minutes to pop in for a parcel.
The reason: Longer-stay shoppers - perhaps visiting premises in Wrawby Street - might well monopolise the bay, reducing the opportunities for a quick stop-and-go visit to the sorting office.
Brigg Town Council is happy for the other two bays - further away from the sorting office, closer to Hewson House - being extended to one hour's parking from the current 20 minutes.
We think that once North Lincolnshire highways staff have chewed over the response to their "consultation" and made firm recommendations, the issue of whether Brigg is to get further yellow lines will land on the  desk (or desktop) of our own Councillor Nigel Sherwood, in his role as Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods.
If he decides to support any parking restrictions for Brigg, they will have to be advertised by way of official notices and that's when Joe Public can raise any objections.

SLIGHTLY CHILLI RECEPTION FOR BRIGG TAKEAWAY'S APPLICATION

An unusual planning application is giving Brigg town councillors food for thought.
It has been lodged for the Diya Spice takeaway at 7 Bigby Street.
Planning permission is currently being sought from North Lincolnshire Council to retain the relocation of an extraction flue.
Brigg Town Council must be consulted as the first stage in the planning process. And when the application appeared before the Planning and Environment Committee, meeting in the Angel Suite, it prompted a good deal of discussion and, overall, received a slightly chilli reception.
There was sympathy for local residents who, it was suggsted, may be affected by noise and vibration resulting from equipment.
Coun Penny Smith said of the issue before them: "I think this is an interesting one."
She described it as a retrospective application.
There was suggested "noise nuisance to residents" and "vibrations that can be felt."
Coun Chris Dyson pointed out that a lot of work had been done to the equipment in question, which had been rebuilt and reconfigured.
The committee would like to find out whether nearby residents feel remedial action has solved the problem.
So Brigg Town Council will withhold its final comments to North Lincolnshire Council until that information is known.
Isfak Ahmed, of Diya Spice, said they had replaced the old ducting system due to the noise nuisance the kitchen extraction system was causing a neighbour.
"The new ducting has replaced the old one so that the position of the flue remains the same, which is located at the side of the building," he added.
"The design and size of the flue is similar to the other fast food properties in the area and is definitely an
improvement from the previous design."
North Lincolnshire Council, as the planning authority, will decide whether the application curries favour, or not.

BRIGG FIREWORKS DISPLAY- ANY CHANCE OF IGNITING SOME INTEREST?

It's sad that Brigg is not going to have a communal bonfire/firework display yet again this autumn.
Most people in Brigg will remember going down to the Recreation Ground for communal celebrations that started in the 1970s and ran for many years.
Such celebrations are expensive to mount and require a great deal of voluntary help, with obvious "Elf and Safety" issues to be addressed.
However, we've just glanced through the newly-issued North Lincolnshire Council official events listings for mid-September to the end of the year and discovered that there will be Bonfire Night events on November 5 in Winterton, Barton and Scunthorpe (and probably other villages).
Here are the details if you wish to drive out of Brigg and attend:

Monday, November 5
Gates open 5.30pm, bonfire 7pm, fireworks 7.20pm - Winterton Bonfire - Winterton showground, Mini-fair, stalls, entertainment, refreshments. £5 per car including occupants or pedestrians adults £2, children £1 (under 5s free) 07785 277780.
Gates open 5.30pm, bonfire 6pm, fireworks 6.30pm - Scunthorpe Rugby Club Bonfire - Heslam Park. 01724 843013.
Bonfire lit 6pm - Barton Lions' Bonfire – Baysgarth Park. Admission £3, £1 unaccompanied teenagers, under 16s free if accompanied by paying adult.

Clearly it's far too late to sort anything for November 5, 2012, but is there any chance that some group might come forward and look at bringing back this communal event in 2013? The new traders' partnership is a go-ahead organisation, but Brigg Recreation Ground is so far from the town centre that it's hard to see how traders (apart from food outlets) would gain any direct benefit for what would be a great deal of effort.

NEW BOYES STORE IN BRIGG THROUGH FIRST PART OF PLANNING PROCESS

Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee has raised no objections to an application for advertisement consent relating to signs for the new Boyes company store in the former Brown & Co auction rooms on Old Courts Road.
North Lincolnshire Council will now decide whether to grant advertisement consent to the firm which is bringing more than 20 new jobs to Brigg.

BRIGG OPERATIC STAGES CAROUSEL AT VALE ACADEMY

Brigg Amateur Operatic Society's show this autumn will be Carousel.
Performances will run from Tuesday, October 30 until Saturday, November 3 inclusive at the Westmoor Hall of the Vale Academy, off Grammar School Road.
There will be nightly performances at 7.30pm, with the usual Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
Tickets are available from Brigg Beds in Princes Street.
"Brigg Operatic" - as many call it - has been staging shows in the town for more than a century. For decades the favoured venue was the much-missed Corn Exchange, prior to its demolition.

BRIGG FARMERS' MARKET NEXT SATURDAY

Just a reminder that Saturday, September 22 is the date of the next monthly Brigg Farmers' Market, from 9am to 3pm. The organisers at North Lincolnshire Council suggest: "Visit this FARMA accredited award-winning market and buy delicious local food from the people who produce it.  Now with over 30 stalls selling everything from ostrich to smoked salmon and home-made cakes to sauces."
As all locals know, farmers' market Saturday is generally Brigg's busiest of the month, with many/most of those attending the big event in the Market Place also using other shops and services while they are in the town centre.

BRIGG NETBALL CLUB TO BE HELPED BY TOWN COUNCIL

Brigg and District Netball Club is to get £250 - along with help and advice from Brigg Town Council - following an  application being submitted in writing for a grant/donation.
A meeting of the council's Policy Committee in the Angel Suite heard that the club really needed to find additional finance.
As is always the case with such applications, the town council required a financial statement from the club, which was studied by councillors before they reached a decision.
Coun Mel Oades viewed the club's income and expenditure and concluded there was a "funding gap."
He felt the club needed to hold fundraising events.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard thought that being informed about a "Custodian Pot" available in North Lincolnshire might prove helpful to the club. She also pointed out that as club members lived in places other than Brigg, it would be worth the club approaching local parish councils for support, as had happened with the skatepark near the leisure centre.
Coun Jackie Brock suggested money from Brigg Town Council might prove "a lifeline" to the netball club.
Coun Ed Arnott felt the club would have to raise its fees and subscriptions.
"Running a sports club is extremely expensive," he said. "We need to help them but we can only help them so far."
Coun Penny Smith then proposed £250, while Coun Arnott suggested help and advice should also be offered to the netball club.

TENNIS FACILITIES IN BRIGG - THE BALL SHOULD BE IN WHOSE COURT?

Helen Cresswell, well-known in local tennis circles, has been in touch to point out that now Andy Murray has won the US Open, and lifted this sport into the headlines, perhaps mention should also be made of  Brigg's lack of courts.
She feels this to be a valid subject for discussion, noting that the former council-owned tennis courts near the Recreation Ground have been removed to become an area of car parking next to Brigg Town Football Club.
These courts became increasingly dilapidated over the years and would have required major investment to get them back into use, but they have now gone forever.
The ball's in your court if you wish to comment.
As things stand at present it would seem to be "Advantage Helen" in the debate.

READ BETWEEN THE LINES TO FIND OUT BRIGG BUYER

It's only a few weeks since 7 Market Place - the prominent, listed building in Brigg town centre - was sold by North Lincolnshire Council.
Keen to make a sale, the authority gave a guide price on its own website when this property went on the market but then declined to make public how much the coffers had been swelled by the subsequent sale or  give the identity of the purchaser.
In terms of the price, Brigg Blog feels this belongs in the public domain; you may share our view, or even disagree.
You may feel differently about the council making known the new owners' identity. If so, we'd just like to point out that we passed 7 Market Place this morning and noted a neat metal plaque near the front door, bearing the name of a well-known Brigg firm sited not a million millimetres, never mind a million miles, from this former Georgian town house.
You can have a look at the plaque next time you are in the Market Place.

BRIGG PARKING CONCESSION NEEDS A SLIGHT TWEAK

I felt slightly uneasy about observing the "parking police" in the Angel Suite car park in Brigg late this morning while the all-day Wedding Fayre was going on inside the building.
It's a fair bet that I would have copped a fine for parking in a North Lincolnshire car park on a Sunday without displaying a valid ticket if I hadn't been fortunate enough to spot a uniformed official on patrol and gone over to check the message above the meter before locking my car and going inside for a look round.
For it never occurred to me that you need to get a free parking ticket and display it ON A SUNDAY - a day when you'd normally be hard pressed to find a couple of cars in the Angel car park at the same time.
Monday to Saturday inclusive, most of us can see the need to get a ticket from the meter. But why does this have to apply on Sundays and bank holidays when there are generally few visitors?
The free parking concession has been a great bonus for Brigg and won very wide plaudits for those running the council. But what some of us saw today in the Angel car park did not seem to be in line with the well-meaning intentions behind the free car parking scheme.
We would like to suggest they exempt Sundays and bank holidays forthwith.
If it's general policy to send someone out and about to check cars on Sundays, you wonder whether the income from penalties meets the staff costs.
If the scrutiny today was purely because a big event was going on and more motorists than normal would be parking, other questions spring to mind.
Some of those using the Angel car park today were not from the Brigg area. Hopefully, none of them incurred penalties for failing to read the sign above the meter in the car park and failing to obtain, and display, the necessary exemption ticket.

NEW BOYES STORE FOR BRIGG - PLANNING COUNCILLORS CONSIDER APPLICATION

Part of the planning process involved in Boyes bringing a new store - and jobs - to Brigg is expected to be completed next Wednesday (Sept 12).
The firm's application for advertisement consent to display three illuminated and non-illuminated hoarding signs will be considered by Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee at a meeting in the downstairs lounge at the Angel Suite, from 8pm.
The company is looking to establish the store at the former Brown & Co Auction Rooms, off Old Courts Road.
The meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee is open to interested members of the public.
Other applications coming before councillors next week involve plans in King's Avenue, Bigby Street, Wrawby Road and Dudley Road.
The Town Council Policy Committee meets next Wednesday at 7pm in the Angel Suite Lounge.
Councillors are expected to consider the request for a grant/donation from Brigg and District Netball Club.
The committee will also consider the Town Council’s response to the North Lincolnshire Council Licensing Policy.

REMEMBRANCE DAY IN BRIGG

The Brigg Remembrance Day Parade and Service will be on Sunday, 11th November.
The parade will form up, as usual, at 10.25am in Station Road, ready to move off at 10.35am for the Service at St. John’s the Evangelist Parish Church, which will commence at 10.50am.
Following the service, the parade will re-form and proceed to the War Memorial for the Wreath Laying Ceremony. The parade will return to Station Road to dismiss.
Children from the primary schools in Brigg will hold their own Service at the War Memorial on Friday 9th November at 11.00am, when they will place the Remembrance Crosses in memory of those who died.

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN BRIGG THIS WEEKEND

Brigg District Lions' Cider Festival opened last night at John Reid Transport, off Atherton Way.
It's also running today, so why not pop along later and support this event?
The Lions do a lot of good work in the community, as you know.
Tomorrow (Sunday) sees the second wedding fayre of the year being held in the Angel Suite, from 10am to 4pm. Admission free - refreshments on tap. Many stands will be there, manned by experts who provide a range of wedding-related services.

Organiser Karen Deeley says there will be exciting new exhibitors, ice cream wedding cakes, a bespoke goldsmith, a designer dressmaker, dresses for sale on the day, cards, bespoke winemakers, professional catering services, vintage crockery and limo hire.
She urges brides-to-be to come along.
On offer will be goodie bags and the chance to enter the free prize draws and to "claim big discounts."
