TRIBUTE TO FREEMAN OF BRIGG HUGHIE MARKHAM WHO HAS DIED AGED 102

Many people in Brigg will be very sorry to hear of the death of one of our oldest residents, aged 102.
Hubert 'Hughie' Markham was a mechanic by trade and also a local firefighters for many years.
He was invited to attend the official re-opening of Brigg Fire Station in 2016 and joined Andrew Percy (the Brigg & Goole MP) for the tape-cutting, which followed the premises being refurbished.
Our picture above - courtesy of Ken Harrison - shows Andrew and Hughie at this ceremony, alongside Baroness (Liz) Redfern, another of the VIPs invited to attend.
Hughie, who was a member of Brigg Methodist Church, was made a Freeman of the town in 2019 for his services to the local community - one of only nine people to have received this high honour, awarded by the Town Council.
He was a resident of the Springbank estate for many years.
Hughie is also seen below, in 2016, with serving and former Brigg fire-fighters and the chief officer of the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service.
A service of thanksgiving for Hughie's life will be held at Brigg Methodist Church, Wesley Road, on Monday, February 21 from 2pm.
