HISTORIC BRIGG ITEM 'SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK TO THE TOWN'

A painting showing how Brigg Market Place looked in the early 19th century

An historic item should be returned to Brigg and put on public display, it is being suggested.
The idea has been put forward by local resident Ken Harrison. He used the Public Participation section of the Town Council's February meeting in the Buttercross to ask for an old Brigg milepost to be displayed.
It was re-discovered in Brigg decades ago, when think close to the River Ancholme, and then taken to Baysgarth Museum in Barton in the era of Glanford Borough Council before the North Lincolnshire authority was created.
"It could add extra interest to the Market Place and be a good attraction," Ken suggested.
Coun Rob Waltham proposed that Town Clerk, Kerry McGrath, should discuss the idea with Brigg Heritage Centre.
Brigg Blog thinks the post, dating back to the 18th century, may once have stood on the road between Brigg and Barton in the era of stagecoaches and cattle driving.
It would certainly prove an interesting talking point if displayed in Brigg - perhaps with a plaque to explain its history.
