Brigg once had a Co-op store. But although this renowned retailer has been busy creating new outlets in our area over recent years, it is yet to do so in the town.
The good news is that following Co-op stores opening in Hibaldstow, Scawby and Broughton, another is on its way in Barnetby.
Planning permission for land adjoining the railway village's Victoria Road was granted by North Lincolnshire Council in March 2020 for this single-storey retail unit with on-site car parking for 22 vehicles, plus landscaping.
Progressing this Lincolnshire Co-operative Ltd project which will create 14 full-time jobs, was delayed by the onset of the Coronavirus emergency,
However, site work is now underway, as demonstrated by these pictures Brigg Blog took over the weekend.
The Co-op describes it as a food store, to operate from 7am to 10pm daily.
The company is "hoping to open the doors in summer 2022."
Recruitment will take place next year for team leaders and customer service assistants.
The Co-op will be advertising these jobs on social media and through its vacancies website. Here's the all-important link...
The site of the store near the main Barnetby to Cleethorpes railway line and the now-disused Barnetby East signalbox was occupied by a well-known local scaffolding company for many years.
Barnetby's Co-op will stock fresh and frozen goods, "100% British" meat, fruit & veg, chilled beers and wines and freshly baked bread, pastries and "sweet treats."
There will also be a Love Local range which includes Alfred Enderby fish and Docks Beers, both from Grimsby.
Once completed, Barnetby's Co-op will prove very handy for railway passengers and the main trainspotters who visit the village, being only a short distance from the railway station on the other side of the Kings Road underpass.
Brigg's Co-op store was sited midway along Glebe Road. We think it closed in the late 1960s or perhaps the very early 1970s. Can anyone confirm the year?
