SURVIVING PUB SIGN IN BRIGG A LINK WITH THE PAST

The White Hart pub in Brigg had not served a pint for many months when lockdown 2.0 began, but it remains for sale on the property market.
Many people living in the town hope this Bridge Street hostelry will one day reopen to sell food and drink and with its riverside beer garden returned to use, having proved a very popular spot over many years.
If the property does change hands, the new owners will inherit this sign above the door, carrying the name of a former licensee - Brydie Louise Carrington.
It used to be a legal requirement that the landlord or landlady had to be identified to the public by way of a sign located above the main entrance. This was quietly dropped some years ago through a change in the licensing laws.
Long-serving White Horse landlord Tom Merriman's name remained above the door of the Wrawby Street hostelry for many years after he retired, t be succeeded by others. Indeed, we think Tom was still listed as landlord when Wetherspoon's bought the premises and transformed them.
