Several cycle and walking routes in the Brigg area are being suggested to the public by North Lincolnshire Council, and the local authority is keen to hear the views of local people by way of a consultation that's now under way...
FROM JOEL FRANCIS, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
Residents and visitors to North Lincolnshire are being invited to have their say on plans to improve and create walking and cycling routes in the area.
The routes are part of an ambitious plan to boost local walking and cycling opportunities, encouraging more people to enjoy the benefits of living an active lifestyle, while connecting communities.
You can view an interactive map of current and proposed routes and share your thoughts by completing a survey on North Lincolnshire Council’s website https://www.northlincs.gov.uk/walking-and-cycling-survey
Physical activity like cycling and walking brings huge health benefits; boosting mental wellbeing, promoting weight loss, and strengthening your immune system, while helping to prevent long-term conditions like heart disease.
As well as the personal benefits, walking and cycling also protects and enhances the environment, improving air quality.
Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment and strategic planning, said: “We already have popular walking and cycle routes in North Lincolnshire, like the Scunthorpe Ridgeway and Sustrans Route 1, but this is a real gear change.
“The new routes will help more people to discover the joys of walking or life on two wheels, improving access to the rolling Wolds, woodlands and vibrant market towns that make North Lincolnshire such a special place to live, work and visit.
“Not only are walking and cycling fantastic forms of exercise that help people to keep well, they bring important environmental benefits, contributing to the council’s drive to reduce carbon emissions.”
The project is part of the council’s wider initiatives to make North Lincolnshire even more sustainable, now and for future generations.
A series of forward-thinking schemes have seen the council reduce its carbon footprint by more than 60 per cent in the last decade.
Last month it was announced that the council will plant more than 16,000 trees across 25 acres of new, urban woodland in Scunthorpe as part of the Government’s £500m, 25-year Northern Forest project which will see 50 million trees planted across the north of England from Liverpool to the Humber.
