DETAILS OF NEW BRIGG PROJECT REVEALED

The Environment Agency has now given Brigg Blog details of a project being carried out on the Old River Ancholme which is to continue for weeks.
Our recent post, featuring pictures of machinery working near the Cadney Road railway bridge, generated considerable interest - being read by hundreds of people. Network Rail was working on the bridge last weekend, but said it was not responsible for the machinery operating nearby.  
An Environment Agency spokesperson told Brigg Blog today (Friday, November 20): "As part of our routine inspection we found some damage to the flood embankment on the River Ancholme in Brigg.
"Over the coming weeks we’ll be carrying out repairs which will include adding additional clay, regrading and reseeding the bank.
"We expect the works to be completed by January next year."
Many people in Brigg will be pleased to see flood defence work being carried out. It has been going on - at various locations - since we started reporting duties with the Lincolnshire Times in the 1980s. Riverside areas of Brigg are not much above sea level. So after periods of heavy rain, many people keep an eye on rising water levels - Old and New sections of the Ancholme. Brigg has a flood warden, appointed by the Town Council as part of its emergency plan. Should an emergency arise from severe weather, including snow and rain, or some othere cause it works in partnership with the North Lincolnshire authority.  Brigg has also had a council-appointed snow warden for some years.

Network Rail workers will be returning to the railway bridge this weekend, resulting in Cadney Road again being closed to vehicular traffic for some time, with diversions in place via the A1084 and Howsham in place.
