THEN & NOW: QUEEN STREET, BRIGG

These 'then and 'now' pictures show Queen Street, Brigg, as it was in the early 20th century and how it looks today.
This town centre street in the heart of the conservation area has seen a good many changes over the decades in respect of businesses, but still retains its character.
The building on the left which hosted Stamp's general store in the early 1900s later became the location for K's Korner Cafe which traded well into the 1980s. Located there today is the popular and now long-established China Garden takeaway.
A postbox is in view on the left of the old picture (next to the handcart) but there's no sign of the art deco era Post Office in the distance. It was not erected on the corner of Bigby Street and Queen Street until the mid-1930s. Today it's a parcel depot and mail sorting centre, the counter service being delivered from the rear of Martins shop on Wrawby Street.
When this historic scene was recorded, a good deal of property on Queen Street still belonged to the nearby Sutton, Bean Brewery which owned the Britannia Inn and many more throughout the area. It made its last batch of ale in 1924.
Brigg Blog posted a feature about the changing face of Queen Street some weeks ago. Since then, in our archive, we chanced upon the 20th century picture and thought it would prove of interest.
