JUSTGO TO BRIGG MARKET

It was heartening to see a good array of stalls on the Thursday market in Brigg yesterday (October 15) continuing this long-lasting feature of our historic town first established by royal charter early in the 13th century.

Plenty of potential shoppers were in the Market Place - assisted by good weather. And they weren't all from Brigg by any means.
Welcome marketing and promotion is afforded to the monthly farmers' markets (also organised by North Lincolnshire Council) and rightly so, but we should not forget the importance of the weekly general markets held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The vast majority of visitors who browse the stalls also call in at other businesses within the town centre.
A BBC Look North reporter and a colleague were in the town centre on Thursday morning.
One of the new JustGo dial-a-ride buses was parked near the Buttercross while the market was under way yesterday - giving passers-by an opportunity to ask questions about the service and collect leaflets explaining how it operates.
That's a worthy aim, but is this the most suitable location? Isn't the pedestrian area supposed to be vehicle-free, apart from deliveries to business premises or market traders' vehicles?
Clearly, there is considerable 'footfall' passing the Buttercross, but we suggest a better spot might be on Cary Lane, where buses stop and pick up passengers.
On the day JustGo launched in early September, two of its vehicles were parked up outside the Wilko store, with advice being offered to potential passengers.
JustGo posted a message on Twitter yesterday saying: "We're out and about again today, this time at Brigg Market! We have our usual freebies plus information on where and how to use JustGo North Lincs to travel across North Lincolnshire. Come and say hello!"
Brigg Blog has asked for statistics for the first few weeks of JustGo in North Lincolnshire (reply awaited).
