Great interest having been shown in our recent post about the currently closed White Hart pub in Brigg being put up for sale , today we offer some archive pictures of the historic riverside hostelry on Bridge Street.
They date back to the very late 1970s and early 1980s when the then semi-derelict premises were refurbished by local businessman Ray Neall and his wife Norma and reopened to great acclaim.
Gwen's Bargain Shop, which was trading long before national 'pound' premises became widespread across the UK, can be seen (in part) on the picture above which was taken in June 1979. Some of the Neall family's future home was under construction next door at the time.
Another image, taken some months later, shows the pub nearing completion, with Riverside House just visible on the right. This rundown property was later removed, creating more room behind the hostelry.
Having reopened under the Nealls, the pub became very popular, particularly during the warmer months of the year when people packed its extensive beer garden overlooking the Old River Ancholme.
The White Hart has changed hands several times since the Neals came to the rescue it in the 1980s, being in brewery ownership until a couple of years ago.
