Brigg Blog's recent posts about Tesco introducing free charging facilities for customers' electric cars at its Barnard Avenue store generated plenty of interest, but North Lincolnshire Council also has a couple of topping up points available in the rear car park of its Angel building (accessed from Elwes Street).
We have now asked the authority for statistics showing how much these are being used (reply awaited).
The local authority's meters indicate that the cost of using the council charging point is £1 per hour. Signs give instructions to drivers about how to top up.
In March 2016 we reported that the council had invested in two electric vans and installed an electric charging point in the car park behind the original Scunthorpe Market to help reduce the authority's carbon footprint.
This was the first public 24-hour charging point in North Lincolnshire allowing the public to charge their electric vehicles. Other points soon followed in our Angel car park.
Two electric vans were purchased for use by Community Wardens, making their trips around North Lincolnshire more environmentally friendly.
Messingham's Coun Neil Poole, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, stressed in 2016: “Reducing our carbon footprint is extremely important, which is why we are always trying to find ways to do this. We have initially bought two electric vehicles to try them out, and if they are a success we will consider buying more.
“More and more people are buying electric vehicles as they are seeing the many benefits it has on the environment and the reduced costs to run them."
