UPDATE ON METAL CAN DEPOSIT VOUCHER SCHEME SHOWCASED IN BRIGG

Brigg Blog has now received a helpful update about a national can recycling scheme which was showcased in the town.
We pointed out it's now three years since a special vehicle visited the Market Place, giving vouchers to local folk who deposited metal cans. We noted that payments for deposits are now being made on the Continent and wondered how long it will be before something similar is on offer here.
Coun David Rose, Cabinet Member for Environment and Strategic Planning at North Lincolnshire Council, has since told Brigg Blog: "The government's Environment Bill is gradually making its way through Parliament but there is likely to be a delay in the introduction of a deposit return scheme until 2024.
"We would be very keen to introduce a scheme locally but would need the co-operation of retailers and they, understandably, want to see a national scheme in place.
"So, for the time being, we have to be patient!"
Brigg Blog reported on the scheme three years ago, and deposited some cans along with other townsfolk.
We noted at the time: "The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) generated a great deal of valuable publicity for its national recycling initiative.
"It is hoped that reverse vending machines will be made available across the UK so householders, rewarded with vouchers, can be given a real incentive to recycle."
Currently, people do not receive vouchers or cash for the cans they deposit at recycling sites or put out for kerbside collection.
