RAILWAYMEN SCRAPE THROUGH IN SPORTING SHIELD
The stop/start beginning to the season nearly cost Barnetby dearly in the 2nd round of the Sporting Shield, writes Lee Fielden.
Having played every other week, their rustiness was apparent for all to see and despite Josh Goodman putting the Railwaymen 1-0 up inside 2 minutes following a defensive mix up the fluidity of week in week out game time wasn’t there.
Despite this Barnetby went 2-0 up on 25 minutes when, following great work down the right-hand side, Goodman centered for Harry Finnis to tap home his first of the season.
Goodman and Finnis then missed chances to make it 3 and the inevitable happened; Crowle made it 2-1 following a deflected shot agonisingly making its way through the unfortunate Jackson’s legs in goal.
2-1 at the interval, the next goal was crucial. It was Crowle who got it, their performance belaying the position in division 2 that they currently hold. A cross from the right was deftly placed paced in to the bottom corner after 53 minutes.
2-2... and game on. O’Callaghan stung the hands of Crowle keeper before planting a stunning free kick past him to make it 3-2 on 64 minutes.
Veteran Steve Jordan came on in the 65th minute, replacing Watson; and when O’Callaghan fed Finnis in for his 2nd to make it 4-2, all look settled.
Teams from the “Isle” don’t lie down, though, and made it a nervous end for Barnetby by pulling a 3rd back with 3 minutes to go.
