With fewer than two crimes a day being recorded on average in Brigg this year, townsfolk will be keen to keep it that way and to see even this small number further reduced.
So there will be considerable support for tougher anti-crime measures to be introduced in the near future.
They are aimed at comabating and discouraging various types of anti-social behaviour.
Coun Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds) has welcome the new measures, ahead of their introduction.
FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
A comprehensive series of hard-hitting new measures to protect residents and public spaces from anti-social behaviour has won the support of local people following a consultation exercise. These will now be introduced from 21 October 2021.
The measures will help rid public spaces of rowdy and unpleasant behaviour so residents feel safe in their communities.
Street drinking in a public place, swimming in open water after being advised not to, and riding a motor cycle or quad bike in a manner deemed to be anti-social will all become punishable by fines of up to £1,000.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “I am pleased that our proposals on new measures to tackle anti-social behaviour and enviro-crime have won the support of local residents.
“There are some areas where inconsiderate people behave in ways which we should not put up with. These new powers will give the council and the police a new tool to tackle this inconsiderate behaviour with fines of up to £1,000.”
Cllr John Davison, Cabinet member for Ashby, Scunthorpe and Bottesford added; “Anti-social behaviour is a blight on people’s lives and perpetrators need to know that it will not be tolerated here in North Lincolnshire. Sometimes fines are the only way to stop people from committing environment crimes the recklessly impact on local communities.”
The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) will give the police and council enforcement officers further powers to tackle street drinking and drug use, prostitution, drug-dealing, excess noise and other incidents that create nuisance or distress.
The 19 prohibitions include:
- Refusing to stop drinking in a public place when asked to do so
- Excluding dogs from within children’s play areas
- Street begging
- Gathering in vehicles in a way that may cause harassment, alarm or distress
- Performing stunts in a vehicle, such as doughnutting or handbrake turns
- Swimming in open water after being asked to stop
The measures will come into force on 21 October 2021 across North Lincolnshire.
