CALL FOR SURVEY OF ROAD CROSSING PLACES ACROSS BRIGG

A road crossing survey review might be in order on the two A-graded roads in Brigg, we suggest today.
The A18 inner relief route along Barnard Avenue dates back to the early 1990s and thousands of vehicles continue to use it daily.
North Lincolnshire Council is now considering a new zebra crossing not far from the Ancholme Way Bridge to replace the old traffic islands nearby.
We hope this new facility is installed in the not too distant future, having very recently observed a near miss involving someone using the traffic island near the Yarborough Hunt as a van approached (at acceptable speed) along Bridge Street. We stress this did not involve any of the vehicles picture above.

Near the Ancholme Way bridge we had a lengthy wait for a gap in traffic to cross the A18 towards Lidl on Sunday afternoon, which is perhaps the day of the week with the fewest vehicles, on average.
On the other side of town, we suggest a survey of Wrawby Road from the Monument roundabout to the Recreation Ground entrance.
Near the roundabout and the start of Glanford Road, there is only a traffic island to help pedestrians cross THREE lanes of approaching traffic.
Does this section of road now meet the criteria for a traffic-light controlled crossing to be considered?
Currently, pedestrians wishing to cross towards the railings near Abbey Village often hope that a driver approaching in the near lane (about to turn left into Bigby Road) pulls up short of the roundabout and waves them across. This does happen but suggests the crossing measures here need to be reviewed by the highways experts.
The increasingly busy A1084 has a traffic island adjoining the Monument roundabout but no other safe crossing point along Bigby Road towards the railway crossing.
Brigg's existing button-controlled crossings on the A18 are well sited and well used, particularly the one near Old Courts Road.
However, things can change over the years and therefore a 2021 survey of pedestrian crossing points might be in order.
The highway authority's suggested new zebra crossing near Ancholme Way comes at a time when many new properties are being built off Bridge Street, with more on two other sites to follow (planning permission having been granted).
These are bound to result in increased journeys by car and on foot along the A18 towards central Brigg in the years to come.
