Sports-minded people living in, or near, Brigg may be interested in training to become qualified cricket umpires.
There is a nationwide shortage of officials to stand in local league matches between mid-April and mid-September.
Every close season, training courses are run at various locations across Lincolnshire, and one is coming up about 10 miles from our area.
It will be held on Saturday/Sunday, February 5 and 6, 2022 at Normanby Park Cricket Club's headquarters on the northern outskirts of Scunthorpe. Book your place and find out more through this link...
Or, if you have any questions about umpiring, send an email to glennbardill@outlook.com
Due to the shortage of umpires, a number of Brigg Town Cricket Club matches this spring and summer did not have neutral officials appointed to take charge. Other Brigg games had one umpire, rather than two. Broughton and Hibaldstow teams were in a similar position.
If no qualified umpires are available to stand, the team captains have to delegate someone to do so, which usually means players from the batting side taking turns for a few overs apiece.
It's not essential to have played the game at club level to become a match official; the umpires' association is looking for people with an interest in the sport. Full and expert training is giving on these courses.
We did a dozen years on the Scunthorpe & district panel. It's often said that the umpires enjoy the best possible view of league cricket... far superior to what spectators get on the boundary's edge, even on small-sized grounds.
Expenses are paid to appointed umpires to meet their travel costs, so no-one need be out of pocket. If teas are being served by the home club, the match officials get theirs free.
Umpires do NOT have to commit to standing in games every Saturday or Sunday during the season.
