TITLE-CHASING BRIGG TOWN EXTEND LEAD AT THE TOP OF THE TABLE

Brigg Town Football Club enjoyed an important home win yesterday afternoon (Sunday, April 3).
The Zebras' senior side (in terms of age) defeated Springhead Highway 3-1 at the EC Surfacing Stadium (Hawthorns).
Betts (2) and Barley were on target for championship-chasing Brigg Town Veterans who have a 12-point lead at the top of Hull & District League Division Four.
Below them are Cottingham Rangers (second) and Springhead (third) but these teams have games in hand on the Zebras.
Brigg Vets have now won 12, drawn two and lost only one of their league fixtures.
Only one of our local teams was in action in the Paul Fox Scunthorpe League yesterday - Broughton WMC losing 9-0 away to Ashby FC in Division One.
Late last week, Brigg Town FC hosted a closely-contested cup final for the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District League, to decide the winners of the Johnstone Insurance Sporting Shield for the 2021/22 season.
College Wanderers came back from two goals down to beat The Butchers Arms 3-2 after extra time.
College fell behind after four minutes when Butchers were awarded a penalty.
The spot-kick, taken by Benjamin Lock, was saved by College keeper Jake Harris who was unfortunate to palm the ball out to Adam Sparrow who scored.
Both sides had further chances, but it remained 1-0 at half time.
The second half started in similar vein with both keepers having to work hard to keep the score down.
The game looked to be up for College when Adam Sparrow scored again after 66 minutes.
This prompted College to make changes which eventually resulted in them pulling a goal back after 73 minutes through substitute Ben Henderson.
With the game looking over, however, Ben had other ideas and scored a 92nd minute equaliser to take the game into extra time.
With College in the ascendancy, Lewis Downie scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 107th minute.
Brigg Blog's thanks go to league fixtures secretary, Paul Birkitt, for supplying a report of this close encounter.
This Saturday football league is sponsored by Brigg company EC Surfacing, based on the Europa Way business park. And Brigg Town FC's Hawthorns ground is now the EC Surfacing Stadium.
