People from the Brigg area with an interest in local football have the chance to join 100th anniversary celebrations being hosted by a very well-known Saturday competition.
The Scunthorpe and District League is to mark its centenary season with a special dinner.
This will be held on Friday, June 3 at Heslam Park, off Ashby Road, Scunthorpe - the home ground of Scunthorpe Rugby Union Club and Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club.
There will be a three-course meal, and the guest speaker is Alan Kennedy - the former England, Newcastle, Liverpool and Sunderland defender.
The showpiece event is 7pm for 7.30pm, with tickets costing £25.
We gather these have been selling well, so local sports fans interested in securing a seat need to apply without delay.
A £10 deposit is required. Contact league secretary/treasurer Paul Birkitt by emailing scunnyfootballleague@sky.com
Barnetby United and Briggensians currently have two teams apiece playing in the Scunthorpe League, which is currently sponsored by Brigg company EC Surfacing Ltd, and Barnetby official Lee Fielden has kindly supplied information about the dinner.
Brigg Amateurs had three teams in this league for some seasons in the 1980s, and the town's White Horse FC, based at the Wrawby Street pub, was also involved.
Brigg Recreation Ground then had two grass pitches and they hosted games every week from September through to late April.
At this time of the year, to catch up with fixtures postponed during the winter, midweek evening games were common.
In the Paul Fox Scunthorpe League yesterday (Sunday) Brigg team Black Bull won 3-2 in a Division Three local derby away to Barnetby, while Broughton drew 0-0 against Black Beauty in Division One.
Brigg Town Development are away to Grimsby Borough Reserves tomorrow (Tuesday, April 12) in the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League Premier (7.45pm kick-off).
