REVEALED: WHEN BRIGG SCHOOL ENDED BOARDING PROVISION FOR LIVE-IN PUPILS

The former Brigg Grammar School Boarding House where pupils lived

Brigg Blog can now reveal when boarding provision for live-in pupils ended at the town's oldest educational establishment.
A recent post looked back on accommodation offered to pupils at Brigg Grammar School and the Sir John Nelthorpe comprehensive which followed from 1976.
A long-serving member of staff has kindly been in touch to say the last academic year with boarders at SJN was September 1992 through to July 1993.
At that time there were only seven pupils living in accommodation provided on the site.
Our informant has also confirmed that the last teacher to carry the title Boarding Master was Gerry Longden, which we suggested might have been the case.
Gerry was a very well-known local sportsman - being a very talented golfer and a fine all-round cricketer, as well as playing hockey and football.
However, following Gerry's tenure as Boarding Master there was a teacher with boarding duties who lived in the boarding house.
Our recent 'flood of memories' reflections on the history of school boarding in Brigg was prompted by an application submitted to refurbish the historic boarding house building - now used for other purposes.
The proposed scheme has yet to be decided by North Lincolnshire planners, as the application's public consultation period does not conclude until July 7.
Brigg Grammar School opened its doors to pupils in 1680, with the three-storey boarding house (pictured above) being constructed in the 1870s.
