AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR & HISTORIAN COMING TO TALK IN BRIGG

Brigg Blog has been asked to mention that a book author & historian from Down-Under will be coming to the town this week, and that local folk have a chance to meet him.
An Evening with James Boyce will be held on Wednesday (June 15) in the Buttercross, Market Place, from 7pm.

James, from Australia, will be talking about his book, Imperial Mud, which looks at drainage of marshland in the UK.
Brigg's Rabbit Hole bookshop says the book "is relevant to the history of our local area and the draining of the marshes in The Isle of Axholme."
It says the evening "promises to be filled with knowledge and insight."
Like the Isle of Axholme, our Ancholme valley was drained centuries ago to prevent periodic flooding and allow more land to be used to grow crops.
This was how we came to get the New River Ancholme in addition to the Old 'cut' meandering its way across the flood plain.
Before protective sluice gates were installed at South Ferriby, water from the mighty River Humber has a clear run down to Brigg and well beyond to the south where the Ancholme begins.
