PROCLAIMING THE NEW MONARCH IN BRIGG AND SCUNTHORPE

A ceremony was held in Brigg Market Place in 1952 to proclaim the new monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who had succeeded her father, King George VI.
A similar ceremony will be held tomorrow (Sunday, September 11, 2022) in Scunthorpe town centre to proclaim King Charles III as the monarch. People from Brigg and district are welcome to attend.
Brigg Urban District Council was still running local government in 1952; today we have North Lincolnshire Council - a unitary authority.
Coun Edward Dodd, as chairman of the UDC, read the proclamation 70 years ago.
Coun John Briggs, the Mayor North Lincolnshire, will do likewise tomorrow.

FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

Following the passing of our late sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, a traditional proclamation will be made by the Mayor of North Lincolnshire on Sunday, 11 September at 3.30pm in Cole Street in Scunthorpe.
Cllr John Briggs will formally announce the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of our new monarch, King Charles III.
Residents from across North Lincolnshire are welcome to attend this proclamation, which is an old tradition traced back across many centuries.
In the modern age, a local proclamation is no longer the means by which the people will learn for the first time that they have a new monarch but a chance for residents in North Lincolnshire to come together to mourn the death of our longest serving monarch and mark the start of the reign of His Majesty King Charles III.
Cllr Briggs, the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, offered his condolences following the announcement of Her Majesty’s passing, saying: "It is with a heavy heart that I shall have to proclaim the passing of our late Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II.
"Many of us have lived our entire lives under her reign, and we will remember her with affection and gratitude for her lifetime of service.
“Our sadness at this time is shared across North Lincolnshire, the country, and around the world.”

 

Local teams will not be playing football today (Saturday, September 10). Leagues across the country have postponed fixtures. It is anticipated the games will be re-arranged.
Recreational (club) cricket across the country is going ahead today as scheduled, the sport's national governing body indicates. A minute's silence is being recommended in memory of Her Majesty.
Cricket matches suspended yesterday (Friday) including the current Test involving England.
