CRICKET ROUND-UP: BRIGG TOWN, BROUGHTON & HIBALDSTOW ALL IN ACTION

Brigg Town Cricket Club made the short trip to Hibaldstow to take on Scunthorpe Town 3rds yesterday (Saturday, September 10).
This being their final fixture, Brigg had to win to avoid finishing at the foot of the Lincolnshire County League Division Three West table.
Having contained Scunthorpe to a moderate 146 for eight (Nick Beacock taking two wickets) Brigg gave themselves a chance.
However, scoring runs consistently has been the main problem this season and they were dismissed for only 59.
Broughton 2nds - runners up in Division Three West - should have hosted Haxey 2nds but the Isle of Axholme club could not raise a second team on this occasion. So Broughton were awarded a maximum 20-point walk-over win, in accordance with League rules. Haxey 2nds ended the season next to bottom - just a few points above Brigg.
Broughton 1sts completed their Division One programme with a decisive victory at Alkborough who were invited to bat first and dismissed for 94 inside 20 overs.
Phil Heath took three wickets and there were two apiece for Robbie Ward, Sean Clixby and Paul Mitchell (the latter playing against his former club).
Broughton reached their target in quick time, with Nick Dobbs scoring an unbeaten 58.
An end-of-season social night out was later enjoyed by Broughton captain Russ Blackburn and his players at the Yarborough Hunt, on Bridge Street, Brigg.
Brigg Blog was asked to venture into the beer garden to take an after-dark picture of batsman Neil Simpson who had donned a distinctive duck costume - duck being the cricketing term for failing to score any runs in an innings.
However, in fairness to the long-serving opener, we should point out that yesterday Neil helped his side by scoring a handy 18.
In Division Two, Hibaldstow 1sts needed points yesterday to stay clear of the relegation zone.
Although beaten at Alford, they managed seven bonus points - bowling their hosts out for 205 (Josh Cowling grabbing five for 39) and responding with 150 for five in 45 overs (Hamza Shahid 52 not out). Hibaldstow still have one Lincs League game to come, although all our other local sides have now finished their fixtures..
There was no football for Brigg Town fans to watch (home or away) yesterday as leagues across the country postponed all scheduled games following the death of the Queen on Thursday. Also cancelled was a Briggensians home fixture at the Brigg Recreation Ground. These fixtures will be re-arranged.
Cricket teams playing yesterday were asked to observe a pre-match period of silence to remember Her Majesty.
