BRIGG CONCERT TO ENJOY, THE TOWN'S TOP TREES & VETERAN SPORTSMAN RETIRES

If a poll or competition was held to decide the finest tree in Brigg, the mature example pictured here, very close to the historic County Bridge, would be a worthy contender.
We think it's a weeping willow and it adjoins the former Nelthorpe Arms beer garden - the pub building having been converted back to residential use after the hostelry had served its final pints four years ago.
Planting new trees is being encouraged at present, in a worthy 'green' initiative spearheaded by North Lincolnshire Council.
But we should not take the existing ones for granted, including the distinctive 'avenues' along Wrawby Road and Cadney Road.
Some specimens in the town centre and elsewhere are the subject of Tree Preservation Orders - meaning council permission must be forthcoming to change them, including significant pruning.

ONE SHOW IN BRIGG: Singer and songwriter Steve Jinski, who has appeared on BBC One's popular One Show, is to perform at a Brigg town centre venue. Steve will be in concert at the Steel Rooms, Springs Parade, on Friday, September 30 (doors open 7pm). Tickets cost £15 and are available from the venue or via www.thesteelrooms.com

VETERAN RETIRES: Saturday's Lincolnshire County Cricket League match between Scunthorpe Town 3rds and Brigg Town at Hibaldstow saw the retirement of Jon Jacklin - Scunthorpe's long-serving all-rounder. 'Jacko' made a few runs for his team as they beat Brigg, against whom he had played many times since the 1990s. He was a fast bowler in his younger days, but batting took precedence towards the end of his career. We can recall playing for Brigg against Jon... and also against his Dad who had the same forename). 'Jacko' took to social media over the weekend to thank everyone at Scunthorpe Town CC who made his final game so special. "I have treasured every moment at the club and to call it a day in that manner - and with a win - was perfect," he said.

BEING WELL READ: New information boards installed at various locations by Brigg Town Council are now displaying a range of posters giving information about forthcoming events and also contact details for local elected representatives. The one pictured here is on Bridge Street. This is a traditional way of informing the general public - supplementing what the council offers in digital form (behind the Angel building) and online. However, many passers-by are stopping to read notices in the new cases. Close to the one erected on Bridge Street is an old public seat which has yet to be replaced. A new one, made from heavy duty recycled materials, was installed nearby some months ago. However, the other (made from wood and metal) is still awaiting attention.

SMALL REQUEST: One of the Mill Lane signs adjoining the junction with the A18 has been missing some of its letters for many months. As a result it appears to be 'twinned' with one of the USA's most famous cities. Some time ago we also flagged up the fact that one of the nameplates on Glanford Road (also near the A18) was missing altogether. We checked again at the weekend, and this is still the case. Could we make a small request for someone in authority to arrange repairs in both cases?

SIMPLY THE BEST: Tickets are selling well for a Tina Turner tribute evening, featuring Julia Martin, at Worlaby Village Hall DN20 0LZ on Saturday, September 24. Places can be booked online through this link...
