BRIGG & DISTRICT MIDWEEK ROUND-UP: CURRY NIGHT, PLANNING & JUST PUZZLING

Members of an interestingly-named group called Wired Curry will be hot footing it to a venue in Brigg to launch an autumn events programme.
Working in the digital and ITC field, they can expect a warm welcome at the Mumbai Lounge, Old Courts Road, on Wednesday, September 14, from 6.30pm.

DECISION PENDING: A Brigg & Wolds Ward housing application will be considered by North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee at its next meeting. Elected councillors will consider a proposed scheme to erect a detached bungalow on land to the rear of 17 Cuthbert Avenue, Barnetby. The committee will be meeting on Wednesday, September 7 at Church Square House, Scunthorpe High Street, from 2pm. This session is open to interested members of the public.

PUZZLING: Some people in Brigg go to the trouble of putting surplus items into bags but then leave leave them as side waste beside litter bins in the town centre, rather than depositing the contents through the slots provided. Pictured here are a couple of examples to illustrate this point. Others fill dustbin sacks with metal cans and then dump the bags in one of the larger containers at the Old Courts Road Recycling Centre without bothering to tip in the contents. It only takes a few seconds to empty the sacks.

APPROVED: Planning permission has been granted by North Lincolnshire Council to erect a replacement two-storey garage/workshop at Cobbles Close Cottage, Main Street, Sturton. Neighbouring West Lindsey has sanctioned the erection of two dwellings, including garages - amendment to plots 3 and 4 of planning permission previously given - for land off Carr Road, North Kelsey.

WELCOME HELP: Swifts which arrived in the Brigg area in May to feast on insects and breed, after 3,400-mile flights from Africa, have now set off south as autumn approaches. Brigg Town Council has discussed providing local nesting facilities for swifts, and now major house-builder Barratt informs us it has provided 4,000 nationwide to help these birds, with plans to reach 7,000 by 2025. It's working in partnership with the RSPB charity "to help give nature a home by supporting wildlife on new housing developments." Barratt built many properties in and near Brigg in past decades. Swifts have been seen in Brigg this summer above the town centre and the central section of Grammar School Road. However, their numbers are declining nationwide.

RULINGS AWAITED: Planning permission is being requested to erect a detached dwelling and detached double garage at The Old Cottage, 32 Church Street, Elsham, and for a proposed extension, redesign and landscaping works at Whimbrel, Owmby Hill, Owmby. Decisions have yet to be taken by local authority planners.

ISSUES RESOLVED: North Lincolnshire Council receives many requests from members of the public to attend to things they've spotted - sometimes major, often minor. "Faded taxi and road markings outside the toilets on Cary Lane in Brigg" were logged for action. The council has since informed the person who reported this: "Works have now been completed and your enquiry has been closed." We didn't report that one to the authority but we did log an out-of-action street light on St Helens Road. It turned out there was a supply problem - since sorted. And the contractor has now been back and restored the surface of the footpath which had to be dug up to locate the fault. It was close to the junction with Kings Avenue.
