There were mixed fortunes for football teams in Brigg Blog's area in the first round of the EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District League's Challenge Cup on Saturday (September 17).
Barnetby United won 6-1 at Ashby Park Rangers (action pictures here from Lee Fielden) while Briggensians visited Ashby Bowl and were beaten 5-0.
RAILWAYMEN INTO THE LAST EIGHT
Braces for Brendan O’Callaghan, Will Forrest and Euan Langton saw Barnetby into the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup as they triumphed 6-1 at the Co-Op ground (Scunthorpe) against Ashby Park Rangers, writes Lee Fielden.
The game started slowly as neither side really got going. On 20 minutes O’Callaghan struck an effort from 20 yards that evaded the Ashby keeper to put Barnetby 1-0 up. Within a minute though Ashby Park Rangers, last season’s division 3 champions, were level as James Bruce ran through to slide home past the advancing Tuplin to make it 1-1.
Great work between Liam Davies and Connor Watson out on the right saw the ball squared to Will Forrest who clipped the ball over the Ashby keeper to restore Barnetby’s lead and see them 2-1 up at half time.
The game resumed with both sides struggling to make any clear cut chances on a narrow pitch, turned 90 degrees from last season.
On 63 minutes Barnetby were awarded a free kick just inside their half, George Merrick lofted the ball into the Ashby box which Euan Langton met with his head and looped an inch perfect header back across the area and into the net to put The Railwaymen 3-1 up.
O’Callaghan was denied a penalty and Carter, Scott and Merrick at the back had to be on their toes as Ashby refused to give up.
Into the dying embers of the game, and following a goalmouth scramble and another penalty claim, O’Callaghan slammed the ball home for his 2nd to make it 4-1 with his 73rd goal for the club.
Callum Wilkins, on for Ben Popple, was causing the Ashby backline problems with his hard work and running and as substitutes Jack Wilson, Eddie Reeve and Freddie George were added into the game Barnetby’s fitness showed.
Great work from Wilkins and Reeve set up Langton to smash home his 2nd of the game to make it 5-1 and moments later following similar pressing from the front line Will Forrest bagged his 2nd of the game to round off the scoring at 6-1.
Barnetby United were playing in the black and white strip.
