Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) will be launching a new season of monthly events tonight (Tuesday, September 6).
A talk entitled Brigg's Historic Connections with New Zealand - The Why & How will be enjoyed at Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, Coney Court.
It will be presented by Professor Carolyn King, of the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, at the next meeting of Brigg Amateur Social Historians.
BASH founder Josie Webb tells us this is the story of local men Henry and Walter Albone, along with Fowler Metcalf, who took stoats and weasels down-under "to exterminate the large rabbit population in the 1880s."
Admission to this talk is free and there's no need to book places in advance; just turn up tonight. A raffle will be held. "All welcome," BASH says.
EXTENDING: Planning permission is being sought in Brigg to erect a single-storey rear extension at a domestic property. It is proposed for Jesmond, on Bigby Road - located between the junction with St Helens Road and the Monument roundabout. The extension will not be visible from the frontage, planners have been told. North Lincolnshire Council is now considering this application (decision awaited).
N-ICE ADDITION: Having now spotted a wall poster inside informing customers that Blyton Ice Cream offers pancakes, Brigg Blog has updated its recent A-Z of takeaway and sit-down eateries within the town centre to include this outlet adjoining the A18. The well-read A-Z feature outlines various past uses of premises currently housing town centre eateries. 37A Wrawby Street - now home to Blyton Ice Cream - has seen some changes. Adjoining the Sutton & Bean Brewery (closed in the early 1920s) for many years, the building later formed part of Brigg Fire Station. This ended when a new facility was created on Barnard Avenue, in the late 1970s. A local businessman then used what is now 37A as a garage for vehicle storage. Having eventually been converted into a retail unit, it was used by Cups & Cones from 2015, prior to Blyton Ice Cream opening here on February 7, 2018. So there are not many months to go until the fifth anniversary.
AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE: North Lincolnshire Council has granted permission for the siting of a vintage ornamental hand-plough on a concrete plinth on the verge at the junction of New Street and Hall Lane, Elsham. The metal plough will not detract from the historic setting of a listed building nearby. The successful application was made by Elsham Parish Council.
OVER THE PENNINES: Members of Ancholme Rowing Club, based on Manley Gardens, enjoyed competing in the North of England Sprint Championships, held near Rochdale on Saturday, with medals being won by local competitors.
CRICKET: Lincolnshire, who made 176 in their first innings, reduced Berkshire to 142 for six in the NCCA Championship final yesterday (Monday) before rain halted play. Day three (of four) in this two innings match being played in the Midlands is due to start at 10.30am today.
PICTURED: Today's Blyton Ice Cream at 37A Wrawby Street, the former Cups & Cones and the premises prior to conversion from a fire station; Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, where BASH will be meeting tonight; and Ancholme Rowing Club's boathouse.
