CYCLISTS WHO IGNORE DISMOUNT WARNINGS IN BRIGG TOWN CENTRE MIGHT FACE FINES

Cyclists who ignore the current restrictions on riding within the pedestrian area within Brigg town centre could be facing fixed penalty fines in the future through new legislation, the Town Council's latest meeting heard.
Coun Rob Waltham, giving his monthly report on local issues in his role as the Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, made reference to suggested enforcement by way of "a fining mechanism" which may be available to local authorities.
This would permit action being taken against riders encountered in the pedestrian zone. "Quick cycling," Coun Waltham stressed in reference to some riders, could be "quite scary."
Long-existing signs on the edge of the pedestrian area (example pictured above) instruct riders to dismount.
Elsewhere in his report and not in reference to cyclists, Coun Waltham mentioned impacting on two bollards within the pedestrian area - one near the Buttercross in the Market Place and the other near the Cooplands bakery shop on Wrawby Street. Both are pictured below.
Coun Waltham also reported that people are responding to North Lincolnshire Council's call for 'dash cam' footage to be sent to the authority, through uploads to its website. This footage shows other folk discarding litter at various locations. Where culprits could be identified and traced, enforcement action would be taken against them.
Coun Waltham also gave an update on Covid. Although the situation had recently stabilised in this area, the virus had not gone away and caution was still being urged. He called on people who had not already taken up vaccinations available to them to do so.

Brigg Blog understands there will be a public consultation about the suggested local use of these new powers.
