STEVEN SEAGULL MAKES HIS HOME IN BRIGG

A unique bird so far spotted by very few local people is now resident in Brigg.
Many more sightings will follow now we have chosen to reveal its location.
Eagle-eyed townsfolk have been passing very close by without catching a glimpse of the gull - made from plastic, we think - which has a permanent perch on top of the Britannia Inn sign on Wrawby Street.

We first spotted the life-like model some weeks ago and have since asked a number of other Brigg residents if they knew it was there without any 'Yes' replies being forthcoming.
"Seeing pink elephants" was a phrase once applied to those paying the price for sinking one or two too many.
Brigg can offer its own alternative - courtesy of the gull.
We've named the Britannia bird Steven - after the all-action actor Steven Seagal, whose notable film quotes include "One thought he was invincible; the other thought he could fly!"

Pub signs and even beer mats are collected by people across the world (known as tegestologists).
There are many hostelries called Britannia in the UK, but Brigg's must be the only one to have a bird in residence on its nameboard.

On the side wall of a domestic property adjoining The Brit (facing East Park) is a metal sign dating back many decades to when the Hull Brewery owned and operated this hostelry.
It is now a locally unique survivor, although there used to be similar signage attached to the Brocklesby Ox on Bridge Street (see picture below thought to date from the late 1960s or early 1970s).
The Brock Ox has since been demolished, with town houses built on the site, facing the A18.

And finally, a reminder... The Britannia Inn has a ticket-only 'all you can eat' Thai buffet night coming up next Saturday (July 30).
There will be sessions from 4pm to 2pm and from 7pm to 10pm.
