A match result in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League had unwelcome consequences for Brigg Town but was just what Broughton 2nds needed.
At their Brigg Road Ground, lowly Caistor 2nds beat promotion-chasing Haxey 2nds yesterday (Saturday, July 16) to leave Brigg Town, who were not in action, even further adrift at the foot of Division Three West.
However, Caistor's emphatic win means that Broughton 2nds remain second in the table, even though they did not play yesterday.
In Division One, Broughton 1st X1 managed a century batting partnership while losing their home derby against Messingham.
The visiting villagers posted 228 for six in their 45 overs as Sean Clixby took three wickets and Robbie Ward two.
Broughton looked in danger of a small total at 73 for six until Shaun Clark (with 39) and Jack Johnstone (44) met up in the middle to stage a recovery
However, the home side still came up short on 179 for eight - a total bolstered by 28 extras.
In Division Two, Hibaldstow suffered a heavy defeat at Nettleham 2nds who managed 199 for nine and then bowled out the visitors to Mulsanne Park for only 57.
Hibaldstow's best bowling figures were Hamza Shahid's two for 27, while Chris Nash later made 18.
Veteran former Brigg Town wicketkeeper/batsman Andy Sharp hit 44 yesterday to help Brocklesby Park notch another handsome victory in Division Three East.
Founded in the early 19th century to play friendly fixtures on the Earl of Yarborough's estate, Park are really enjoying their first campaign since gaining admission to the Lincs League and posted a huge 282 for eight while winning handsomely at Cherry Willingham 2nds.
Brocklesby, now based in Keelby, have won all nine divisional fixtures to far and have built up a huge lead at the top of the table.
Ex-Brigg Town and Hibaldstow wicketkeeper/batsman Dale Coy scored 40 yesterday as Haxey 1st XI enjoyed a fine home win over Lindum 2nds in the Premier Division.
