PREFABS WERE THERE BEFORE BRIGG TOWN FC CREATED THE HAWTHORNS NEARBY

Post-war Woodbine Grove prefabs in Brigg in 1958

Surviving pictures of the biggest post-war estate of prefab houses in Brigg are rare.
So we have to thank Colin Mumby for this view showing a few of the many bungalows on Woodbine Grove as they were in 1958.
This enlargement is from a picture taken of Glebe Road School pupils in sports attire on the nearby Recreation Ground.

The date is helpfully written alongside the print in a scrapbook which forms part of Colin's archive - extracts being kindly brought along to show us and other spectators watching the Brigg Town v Broughton 2nds cricket match on Saturday afternoon (July 9).
The roofs of some properties on South View Avenue (still standing today) can be seen in the distance.
A couple of years after this scene was recorded, Brigg Town Football Club began to develop the Hawthorns ground from grassland adjoining the prefabs (visible at the top of the picture above).
Vehicular access to Woodbine Grove was off Preston Drive, and the road divided neat rows of temporary housing provided by Brigg Urban District Council.
The last prefabs were demolished in the early 1970s.
Woodbine Park - a play area for children - was developed on the site some years later.
Part of it (near Preston Drive) is to be re-purposed for new allotments in a project yet to be completed.
Saturday also saw Colin sharing other pictures, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia from his lengthy career in local sport.
Many Brigg people know that he played for Scunthorpe United Reserves alongside future England star Kevin Keegan.
But on Saturday he showed some letters and postcards from this period (the late 1960s) in which the Iron informed him of his selection for various matches and confirmed that the club would be retaining his services for another season.
Scunthorpe United stationery was used in correspondence posted from the Old Show Ground to his home on the Springbank estate.

Fast forwarding to 1983, Colin produced a colour print of himself holding a handsome trophy won by the notable White Horse Football Club - based at the Wrawby Street hostelry when it was still operated by Wards of Sheffield.
In the background (right) is manager/secretary Steve Brown, while Graham Hunt can be seen (partly hidden) behind Colin.
All three played for Brigg Town Cricket Club during the summer months after football had finished.
Early in his career in the 1960s, Colin appeared for Elsham CC - a notable local club.
On Saturday he shared some newspaper match reports and pictures from that era.
Colin is seen below (left) at the Rec during the Brigg v Broughton 2nds game, as Town's Jack Richards (right) discusses a topic of interest.

Last but by no means least, here's an interesting picture from Colin's collection showing Glebe Road School footballers well over 60 years ago when boots really were boots, and old leather balls were still in use.
