To commemorate the end of the First World War, a range of organisations have pulled together to organise a weekend of events in Brigg on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October.
The town will remember those who served and lost their lives in the First World War. A range of events and activities have been planned across the weekend supported by Brigg Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council, Smooth Solutions, Brigg and District Veterans Group, Brigg Heritage Centre, Brigg Town Business Partnership and the Brigg Poppy Appeal.
A special poppy cascade has been created with the help of volunteers on the entrance to The Angel in Brigg and was visited by the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr John Briggs.
To celebrate there will be:
Old time music hall at Brigg Servicemen’s Club at 1pm on the Saturday, including brass band and singers

  • Armed forces displays
  • Best dressed shop window competition on the Saturday
  • Shop discounts for veterans and serving personnel on the Saturday
  • Children’s activities in Brigg Heritage Centre, as well as on Saturday 3 and 9 November – make peg planes, poppies and tanks
  • Children appropriate War stories sessions will be shared by a serving soldier in Brigg Library with the support of The Rabbit Hole
  • Brigg Poppy 10k race and military challenge on the Sunday

Brigg Library will have a display board with some information regarding a soldier from Bonby who won the Military Medal and bar, and died in action in 1918. There will be a small plinth containing a 2-vol. edition of Kipling's poetry from our Ref Stack accompanied by a little context/explanation.
The shop window judging will be carried out by a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Marines on the Saturday at 2pm. The judge will be looking for the decorated windows to reflect the involvement of the personnel from the former British Empire and Dominions.
In addition to the weekend commemorations, Brigg Heritage Centre also have a pop-up exhibition celebrating the end of World War One. An Armistice Day musical evening with the Blighty Belles on Friday 9 November at Brigg Servicemen’s Club. Tickets cost £12 and are on sale at Brigg Heritage Centre or Brigg Tourist Information Centre.
Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “There are lots of different things happening throughout the weekend in Brigg to commemorate the end of the First World War. The armed forces have protected us for many, many years and it is only right that we commemorate them and thank them for all they have done and still do.
“Many shops in Brigg have agreed to provide a discount to serving armed forces personnel and veterans, which is brilliant. Everyone is welcome to attend and show their support for armed forces, and join in the commemoration events. In addition to these activities, Brigg Farmers’ Market will taking place on the Saturday so there will be plenty to see and do. On Sunday please come and show your support for the runners in the Brigg 10k and the military challenge, many shops, pubs and cafes will be open, too.”
