BRIGG HORSE FAIR DAY PICTURES FROM A MEMORABLE YEAR

Brigg Horse Fair Day 1999 - Tom Wood's brewery dray during the community fair that accompanied the historic event - picture on Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog

Here are some colour pictures taken on the last Brigg Horse Fair day of the old millennium and the final one of the 20th century.
The historic horse-trading part of the event was accompanied by a community fair in the town centre, with stalls and amusements, on August 5, 1999.
These events took a great deal of work to organise and always drew sizeable attendances - but they no longer take place.
Local brewer Tom Wood's horse-drawn dray was a feature of the fair 19 years ago, while music came from a New Orleans jazz band and a fairground organ situated outside the Post Office.
These pictures show some well-remembered Brigg shops that have since disappeared, including Tierney's - a favourite for toys and sweets.
Shoefayre was still meeting local footwear needs on Wrawby Street, while the Black Bull pub had its old frontage, with the name of John Smiths Brewery above the sign.
The Bull remains open today but under different ownership and with an altered colour scheme.
These images show Brigg only a few years after the pedestriansation scheme had been completed.
In the future, is there any chance of reintroducing the community fair that used to be enjoyed on Horse Fair day?
