A project has been completed this week to replace traditional litter bins across Brigg town centre with new 50-50 versions which, as well as litter, also accept items that can be recycled.
North Lincolnshire Council Leader Coun Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds) yesterday confirmed the installation of the final bins.
Among the last to go in was the one pictured above on Thursday in the paved area near Wetherspoon's White Horse pub and the China Garden takeaway.
New bins can now be used throughout the town centre, from Bridge Street in the west to Wrawby Street in the east, including the Market Place and the Old Courts Road car park.
The end result is that Brigg residents and people who are visiting from other areas now have more opportunities to help the environment by recycling as well as disposing of any general litter which cannot be repurposed.
One half of these new bins is for general litter and the other for things which can be recycled.
In the latter category are newspapers and magazines, plastic items and metal cans.
Dog waste 'poo bags' can also be deposited in the litter slots provided by those exercising their pets.
The new bins have sections in the top for cigarette ends and cigar butts.
North Lincolnshire Council will normally be emptying the 50-50 newcomers.
Brigg Town Council's handyman service will also be keeping an eye on bins. If any become full on particularly busy days, the handymen will empty them.
The Town Council's general message to the public is: If a bin is full, please take your litter to the next empty one.
The familiar metal litter-only bins which have now been replaced will not be going to waste (pardon the pun!).
They are to be cleaned with a view to being relocated to other areas.
As an example, the Independent Brigg Line Rail Group is suggesting that Station Road is in need.
Brigg Blog visited Scunthorpe yesterday and noted some of the new-style litter & recycling bins in the town centre. We expect to see more in other parts of North Lincolnshire.
