COUNCIL DECISION MADE ON PLAN TO TURN BROUGHTON PUB INTO CONVENIENCE STORE

Permission to convert the Red Lion on Broughton High Street from a pub to a convenience store has been refused.
This decision was made by North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee at its December meeting.
The reason for refusal was: "The proposed front extension is considered to be an unduly prominent and poorly designed addition that would harm the significance of this non-designated heritage asset and the character and appearance of the street scene."
The application - awaiting a decision since a public consultation period ended in May - was assigned to the committee (made up of elected councillors from across the district) to consider because of 'significant public interest.' It was categorised as a major application.
Anyone refused permission may opt to lodge an appeal, to be undertaken by a Government-appointed inspector.

Pictured here, the Red Lion, 45 High Street, Broughton, adjoins the town's main bus stop which is served by the No 4 Hornsbys service linking Brigg and Scunthorpe. The pub remains open for business.
