HEARD ON BRIGG STREETS: ROUND UP OF TALKING POINTS FOLLOWING A SIZZLING WEEKEND

Very hot weather, diverted trains, markets and cricket were among topics being talked about in Brigg over what was a sizzling weekend.
Among recent Saturday market stalls was one operated by local Pancreatic Cancer Action charity fundraisers. Brigg Blog was informed over the weekend that Zoe Hall, Lesley Whitehand and Andrew 'Sass' Markham collected £292.37p as a result of their 'awareness stand'. "Grateful thanks to everyone who visited our stall," the Brigg group says: "Important funds in the fight against this horrible disease."
A resident of the Market Place emailed yesterday to highlight and praise a litter-picking couple "who seem to be out with their red bags very regularly these days, doing a fantastic job and probably not getting much recognition for why they are doing." Hoping we'll give them a deserved mention, he adds that the community-minded duo are "out all hours." We think they were busy tidying up on Wrawby Street around 7.30pm on Saturday.
Following Brigg Town Cricket Club players sweltering in the heat while in Lincolnshire League action at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, the Broughton club took to their own in identical conditions yesterday (Sunday, July 18) in the Mick Walker North Lindsey League.
Unfortunately, Broughton lost by six wickets when hosting Division Two leaders Alkborough.
Broughton, who are fourth in the table, were bowled out for 97 (Brett Fish top scoring with 32) which the visitors overtook for the loss of four wickets. Hibaldstow did not have a North Lindsey fixture yesterday.
We still hope that, at some point in the future, Brigg Town will have sufficient players to re-apply to join this Sunday League in which it competed for many years from 1979.
Brigg Town Council cannot have imagined that the outdoor table tennis table it recently funded and installed on the Davy Memorial Park near Kings Avenue would serve a second recreational purpose.
In addition to offering local youngsters who requested this facility an opportunity for friendly matches, we are told it is also being enjoyed by some local dogs being exercised on the park when no players are present. They are playing 'chase me' games around the table which is located on the edge of the field.
Council contractors have trimmed abundant foliage sprouting at ground level on trees along Bigby Road, Brigg. This benefits motorists emerging from St Helen's Road whose view of approaching traffic along the A1084 might otherwise have been obstructed. We expect similar tree trimming to follow along Queen Street, on road safety grounds, to assist drivers emerging from Garden Street.
More diverted freight trains came through Brigg yesterday, prompting some local comment on social media. Clearly, from what was written, not everyone read our weekend post explaining why this was happening.

Martin Simpson, originally from Twigmoor, will be singing at the Angel in Brigg town centre on Friday, September 24. This concert begins at 7.30pm, doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £16. Inquire at Brigg Heritage Centre. Further details to follow on Brigg Blog.
