BRIGG FOOTBALL FANS CHEER ENGLAND TO VICTORY IN BARS AFTER 4 DEFEATS FOR LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS

The Euro 2020 football tournament just keeps on giving in Brigg - providing not only great entertainment and excitement for local sports fans who are following England's progress with relish but also very welcome trade for our licensed premises and takeaways.
Big screen live action of last night's game in which England beat Ukraine 4-0 was viewed in most Brigg bars as people took their seats near big screen TVs for the 8pm kick-off. And the same situation will apply on Wednesday (July 7) when England play Denmark in their semi-final at London's Wembley Stadium (also 8pm KO).
Gareth Southgate's side being on top form, many Brigg football fans are now confident England will make it through to the final. If so, it will be the first time our national side has progressed this far in a top tournament since 1966 when Sir Alf Ramsey's team famously lifted the World Cup... also at Wembley (the original stadium),
Among popular Brigg local venues to watch yesterday's quarter-final was Brigg Town Football FC's Hawthorns clubhouse. England's 4-0 win followed a few hours after a 5-1 defeat for the Zebras' first team in a pre-season friendly against Maltby Main.
Brigg Town Cricket Club also lost yesterday on their visit to Lindum 3rds in Lincoln for a Lincolnshire League Division Three fixture. Brigg bowled out their hosts for 182 but then fell short with a reply of 141. However, Brigg gained seven bonus points to add to their tally.
There was also a defeat for Hibaldstow yesterday who made 177 for seven in their Division One home game against Messingham, only for the visitors to secure victory for the loss of only one wicket. Joe Taylor scored an unbeaten 47 for Hibaldstow in this local derby, while Messingham opener Matt Lawson rattled up 144.
In Division Two, Broughton 2nds were also beaten. They did well enough to contain Cleethorpes 3rds to 102 for six but were then dismissed for 86 (Jamie Robinson scoring 20).
Brigg sports enthusiasts really enjoyed watching England last night when some local licensed premises went on to close their doors earlier than might have been expected on a Saturday night... a sensible move. Many people then went home happy and in good spirits to reflect on England's continuing progress in Euro 2020 - delayed 12 months by the Coronavirus emergency. But well worth waiting for!
