The recently taken colour pictures above show demolition work continuing to remove a well-known former cycle shop to make way for new town houses and a ground floor retail unit.
Nos 11 & 12 Bridge Street are being taken down, with three new dwellings, a retail unit and garages to be erected on the site which is just a stone's throw from the A18.
Formerly home to the Sherwood cycle shop (established in the 1960s) the buildings now being dismantled changed ownership many months ago. Planning permission for redevelopment was granted in February 2021.
Also featured here is a picture of the shop in the early 1970s when Ike Tutty's barber's shop was still occupying the adjoining premises near Forrester Street before they formed part of the adjoining sales and repairs business which, for some years, also offered toys.
After he's finished a trim, Ike (or an assistant) would offer a dab of Brylcreem (from a jar) or a lightly perfumed spray to finish things off. The popular spray was generated by squeezing a rubber ball on the bottom of a glass dispenser after the order had been given to keep your eyes shut.
Boys were favouring longer hair styles at this time, but some wary parents accompanied their children to give the barber the clear instruction 'Short back and sides!' or perhaps a crew cut.
Our colour pictures were taken on Saturday (July 10) as demolition work continues. We think the 'Then' view may date back to the Christmas period in 1971 or 1972 as festive lights are on the front of the cycle shop.
