CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN: NON-ESSENTIAL BRIGG SHOPS TO CLOSE & PEOPLE INSTRUCTED TO STAY AT HOME

People living in and near Brigg are being instructed to comply with a stark five-word message from the government: "National lockdown - stay at home."
This follows last night's TV announcement to the nation by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in response to the new fast-spreading strain of the Coronavirus which has caused a rise in cases and is placing extra demands on health services.
All shops other than those which the government classes as essential have been ordered to close, with primary and secondary schools and colleges switching to 'remote learning'.
Although the latest restrictions will not have the full backing of the law until Wednesday, people across the country are being asked to follow them NOW.
Brigg Blog this morning intended to preview a friendly football match planned for this Saturday (January 9) by Brigg Town against Immingham Town at the EC Surfacing Stadium (Hawthorns), arranged when North and North East Lincolnshire were still in the Tier 3 category. However, the new government measures include an immediate ban on football other than 'elite' professional fixtures.
There is also a return to last spring's original lockdown instruction on personal exercise - one daily period only being permitted. Leaving home to go shopping is allowed, when required, and food outlets such as restaurants can continue to offer a takeaway service.
The latest measures are due to be reviewed in mid-February.
Previous lockdowns have been followed by helpful statements about the local situation from North Lincolnshire Council, with comments from its Brigg-based Leader, Coun Rob Waltham. Another may follow later today (Tuesday, January 5) in which case we'll keep you posted. Leisure centres must close.

However, through its website, the council is already telling local residents: "You should follow this guidance immediately. The law will be updated to reflect these new rules."  See details here...
Meanwhile, here's a link to the government's official statement outlining the latest 'Stay at Home' measures and instructions in detail.
