BRIGG SOCIAL, SPORTING AND CULTURAL LIFE REMEMBERED

Brigg Blog today continues its nostalgic look back on town social, cultural and sporting life in our town.
Here are five pictures taken at various times during 1965 - that's 54 years ago.
The one above shows young prize winners from that spring's North Lincolnshire Music and Drama Festival, held in the Corn Exchange. The children featured are now likely to be in their 60s.  Is there anyone you recognise in this line-up?

The picture immediately above shows Brigg Band - also among the prizes at that year's festival. We think that's bandmaster Geoff Benson, centre, receiving the certificate. Joan Dodd and Vin East also feature.

Next we see the Rev Richard Taylor, who was the local Congregational Church minister, visiting a cake stall. The church was on Wrawby Street in a building now being used as offices by an estate agency.

This picture shows people who supported a Women's Institute coffee evening, held in aid of the British Empire Cancer Campaign.

And last but not least, councillors and staff before the annual cricket match played at the Recreation Ground between Brigg Urban District Council and Brigg Rural District Council.
Both Clerks to the Council feature on the front row - the RDC's Robert Crosby being on the extreme left with Joseph J. Magrath of the UDC being second from right.
Others pictured include Couns Gordon Hughes, Reg Harrison, Reuben Barnard and George Atton, plus Mr Sutcliffe (UDC housing officer).
Coun Ken Fisher (UDC) and Coun Richard Coulthurst (RDC) are seventh and sixth from right respectively on the back row.
While fielding, our Dad (Ken) was struck by a hard-hit shot from batsman Richard. Ken never played organised cricket but Richard certainly did - for the Normanby Park club over many seasons.
In the 1980s we played hockey against him a number of times for Brigg while he was still turning out for Normanby's Sunday friendly team. Even at the veteran stage as a full-back, he struck the ball very well.
In decades past, many friendly cricket matches were played midweek on the Rec when it was managed by the UDC and later Glanford Borough Council.
During the early 1980s we took part in one or two of the annual friendlies between Glanford Borough Council Staff and Councillors - perhaps because refreshments followed in the evening at the licensed Corn Exchange!
We were invited to play by Coun Terry Atherton, from Kirton Lindsey, who was the authority's Leader, and John Maplethorpe, the borough housing officer.
At the time we working for the Lincolnshire Times on Wrawby Street, covering Thursday council meetings held in what's now Hewson House on Station Road.
