FLOWERS NOW APPEARING IN BRIGG CARRY AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE

The annual Purple4Polio crocus planting scheme has continued in Brigg, despite the Coronavirus emergency.
The Rotary Club initiative is designed to raise awareness of polio, and scores of colourful flowers are now appearing on roadside verges and grassy areas across the town.
The aim is to eradicate worldwide a dreadful disease which used to paralyse or kill thousands of people a year. It is still present in some countries today.
Purple represents the colour of the dye which is placed on the little finger of a child on mass immunisation days when millions of children in many countries are protected against polio.
In 1985, when the Rotary movement pledged to eradicate polio, there were over 10,000 cases being reported weekly.  Since then there has been a huge reduction.
Purple4Polio crocus planting has been undertaken in Brigg for a number of years. You may well have seen early-flowering crocuses on various grass verges.
