North Lincolnshire planners have now decided an application seeking permission to install a new disabled access to existing doors, including new ramp and steps, at the only grade one listed building in Brigg - now part of the Sir John Nelthorpe Upper School, on Grammar School Road.
Granting permission, North Lincolnshire Council added a condition: "No development shall take place until details of all construction materials have been submitted to, and approved in writing by, the local planning authority and only the approved materials shall be used."
A delegated assessment report on this application by the council said the main planning consideration "relates to the impact of the proposal on the historic and architectural integrity of the Grade I listed building."
It noted that the school would like to use this door as its new main entrance. To ensure this complied with Disability Act requirements, accessible access would be required, including steps and a ramp.
The report concluded that what was proposed "is in keeping with the building and would enhance personal mobility." Brigg Town Council lodged no objections to this application which was submitted through the North Lincolnshire authority's property section, based in Hewson House, Brigg.
The original school building (now grade one) dates back to 1680/81. Major additions/alterations were made by Brigg Grammar School in 1878. The Sir John Nelthorpe comprehensive was established in 1976.
