BRIGG FOLK WERE ALWAYS HAPPY TO CALL AT KEAL'S CHIPPIE

Some people found our recently posted picture of Bridge Street, Brigg, in the early 1970s of interest, as it brought back memories of calling for a cuppa, sandwich or fry-up at a well-known cafe located in premises now occupied by Simon Ho's China Royal Restaurant.

Today we offer a follow-up print - also taken by Ken Fisher - showing properties on the other side of Bridge Street in the mid-1970s. By then some of the former domestic cottages had been turned over to rather basic retail use.
However, prior to that No 38 (on the left) hosted Keal's fish & chip shop.
Folk from Happy Land (across the road) would nip over to enjoy threepen'orth of scraps if they were hard up - or 'one of each' if they were a bit better off for cash.
Happy Land was an area of low cost housing off Bridge Street which lasted into the 1960s.
The properties in this picture were demolished long ago.
Who remembers calling at Keal's chippie?
Perhaps it picked up trade from customers leaving the nearby Brocklesby Ox and Yarborough Hunt.
The original Yarborough ale house closed in the mid-1960s, to re-appear decades later as the real ale pub many people enjoying visiting today.
It has since been extended in both directions along Bridge Street into adjoining properties.
