TIDY START TO THE NEW YEAR IN BRIGG BUT SOME VANDALISM EVIDENT

Brigg made a tidy start to the New Year with little litter being evident across the town centre yesterday (Monday, January 2, 2022) following the weekend and bank holiday. Perhaps some people have made New Year resolutions. However, there was some evidence of vandalism.
Litter on paths and paving was generally located close to bins that were full but awaiting emptying, such as on East Park near the Tintab shelter and the Monument roundabout.
However, there was nothing to stop those who discarded these items taking them home to put into council-provided bins or recycling boxes. That included cardboard cartons which had contained bottles of cans or lager - presumably consumed al fresco.
Bins were full near the China Garden and Marmaris takeaways and outside the nearby Wetherspoon's pub & restaurant on Wrawby Street yesterday, and it was the same picture near Old Courts Road.
College Yard was among town centre locations where broken glass littered the paving.
Sadly, one of the large litter bins by the riverside, not far from the County Bridge, has been vandalised. The door at the front - used for emptying - has been removed from its hinges and discarded on the adjoining grass bank close to B&M's store.
Hopefully it will prove possible to repair the bin.

This riverside path features distinctive We're Watching You posters warning dog-exercisers who fail to clean up after their pets that financial penalties can be imposed by North Lincolnshire Council for such offences.
Anglers have a good record when it comes to taking litter home with them or using bins provided near their pegs..
The picture below shows some of the fishermen (there were others) enjoying a spot of New Year sport on the Old River Ancholme's renowned Spring's Stretch.
This is well-known for its pike but we didn't see any being landed on this occasion.
Conditions were sunny but a stiff wind was blowing across the surface of the river.

A check at the household recycling centre on the edge of the town's main Old Courts Road car park yesterday suggested many local folk have complied with the council's request to recycle as much as possible over the Christmas and New Year period. The big bin allocated to metal cans was almost full.
Today (Tuesday, January 4) council crews will be visiting Brigg households to empty wheelie bins containing plastic and cardboard for recycling. If our household's is anything to go by, they will be collecting plenty following the Christmas period!
