BRIGG LINE HAS SEEN FLYING SCOTSMAN, THE ROYAL TRAIN AND NOW...

The now little-used railway line through Brigg has served many purposes and seen many different type of train since it opened in the 1840s as part of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway's main route between Grimsby and the city then widely known as Cottonopolis.
The Brigg line welcomed fish trains hauling boxes of haddock and cod to markets far inland until the late 1960s, Brigg Sugar Factory beet from farms, an enthusiasts' special hauled by the world-famous Flying Scotsman in 1968 and even Prince Charles aboard the Royal Train in 1985.
The sparse Saturdays-only passenger train service to Sheffield and Cleethorpes has now been suspended until mid-February.
However, over the weekend the Brigg line welcomed a Class 73 diesel on a driver training run between Barnetby and Woodhouse Junction (Sheffield).
It is seen here near the town's barrier crossing on the A1084 Bigby Road early in the afternoon on Saturday (January 8). The train came back later, heading towards Kettleby and Barnetby.
Train drivers have to learn various routes and keep up their 'knowledge' of particular lines.
