Located on the Brigg to Scunthorpe No 4 bus route and with a stop outside its entrance, Broughton's Red Lion pub is receiving a great deal of local interest at present.
A planning application seeking approval to change the use of the hostelry to a convenience store generated 150 comments to North Lincolnshire Council, mainly from members of the public, during a consultation period which ended a few days ago.
Many people voiced objections to Brigg's neighbouring town losing one of its pubs in favour of a store.
A petition opposing the proposed development, carrying dozens of names, has also been sent to the planning authority.
In addition to change of use for the Red Lion, on the High Street, approval is sought for a front extension.
A design & access statement submitted in support of the application mentions Broughton having other licensed premises, and suggests "the community will still be well served by similar establishments."
The store will sell convenience goods such as foodstuffs, newspapers and magazines.
Proposed opening hours are 7am to 10pm, seven days a week, and the venture will create 12 new jobs (a mixture of full & part-time positions). Parking provision is being made for 13 vehicles.
As Broughton Town Council has now lodged an objection to this planning application, the final decision will be made, in due course, by North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee during one of its monthly meetings.
Brigg Blog recently took these pictures of the Red Lion while awaiting the arrival of a Hornsbys No 4 back to town. A commercial vehicle was making a delivery to the pub at the time.
