Brigg is now seeing a reassuring and long-established feature of late Spring in the town which has nothing to do with the relaxation of some Coronavirus emergency restrictions.
The first swifts have arrived back from South Africa and will be making their presence felt well into August before beginning the lengthy return journey.
These birds like to nest under the eaves of suitable buildings and will be feeding their young with insects caught in flight above Brigg over the coming weeks. Hopefully more swifts will follow in the next few days.
Watch their aerobatics and listen out for their screeching calls.
Swifts' usual strongholds include the middle section of Grammar School Road and East Parade/Central Square, with others to be seen over the town centre, particularly near the Old River Ancholme.
House martins and swallows have also returned to the Brigg area lately. But have any locals heard cuckoo calls? This species also winters in Africa before flying to Britain.
