FREE FOOD ON OFFER IN BRIGG

Brigg Blog was expecting that the prolonged spell of hot, dry summer 2018 weather would hit the supply of free fruit available to berry-pickers.
But a recent walk down Mill Lane showed an abundance of tasty brambles on roadside bushes, despite it being only early August.
We wished we'd stuffed a couple of carrier bags in the pocket before setting off.
Bramble bushes were also a common sight near fences a few yards from train tracks.
Coming from a railway family, we recall many a bramble pie, or bramble and apple pie, being served up with lunch or tea - at little or no cost to the household budget.
Some years saw a real glut of brambles, to the point where you got fed up with eating them.
Bramble jam was another use for this tasty fruit that people - young and old - picked from local hedgerows. Does anyone still make it today?
